HAPPY NEW YEAR

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten Son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 16:8 — Better is a little with righteousness than large income with injustice.

Romans 6:13 — No longer yield your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but yield yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and yield your members to God as instruments of righteousness.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Reading family history can be extremely enlightening. I discovered how fabulously wealthy my grandparents were from a county historical record. They didn’t have much money, but the historian described their true worth in terms of their contributions to their neighbors and community. My grandfather was “highly thought of” in the county for his honesty, trustworthiness, and progressive spirit. While we may lament the fact that we don’t have all the “things” that the neighbors have or that we can’t just go out and buy everything we want like Elon Musk, Warren Buffet, or Bill Gates, scriptures remind us that the widow’s mite rang more bells than the bags of gold others tossed in. If I were to write “the rest of her story,” my guess is the widow, like my grandparents, put in long, hard days doing the dirty work and serving wherever needed. In essence, she served as an instrument of God’s righteousness. That is our calling too. How wealthy are you? As we begin a new year, let us rearrange our priorities.

PRAYER

Generous God, You give us everything we need, but our greed gets in the way of living thankfully with what we have. Enable us to rearrange our thinking about “things” and concentrate on joyfully serving You and those around us without counting the cost. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Ezekiel 7:19 — Silver and gold cannot save you on the day of the wrath of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 — (Paul wrote:) We do not want you to be uninformed...about the hardships we suffered... We were under great pressure, ...so that we despaired even of life. This happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I love to fly! In my younger years, I took lessons. I enjoyed every minute of flight instruction. My instructor was a rancher in western Nebraska, licensed to instruct. There were a lot of “touch-and-goes” - take-offs and landings - with the instructor. Then one day, Leonard said, out of the blue, I’m going to get out and let you do it solo. I was both happy and shocked (throw in a bit of fear for good measure)! I can’t help but think that he was as nervous as I was. Take-off was no problem. As I circled to land, many thoughts went through my mind - the “what ifs.” But, all he taught me fell into place, the landing went smoothly, and he waved me around again several times. God works with us in much the same way. God gives us instruction and even the Son as our co-pilot, then steps back and removes our props from time to time to ensure we focus on what is most important. All the gold and silver in the world would not have helped me in that airplane when it came time to land. They are useless also when it comes time to take our final landing - in the Kingdom of Heaven, or... Have you been paying attention to the Lord’s instruction? Do you communicate well with your co-pilot, or are you trying to solo without Him?

PRAYER

As the old hymn goes, “Jesus, Savior, Pilot me....” As You walk with me daily, help me to soar with the eagles, and be my GPS through the confusing maze of daily living. Let Your instructions and directions guide me to my final landing in Your presence. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 42:1 — As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.

John 4:10 — Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I wanted “Roy Roger’s Boots” in the worst way. At least, I thought I did until I saw this really neat gun and holster with Roy Rogers etched in it. They were about the same price. I begged for it, but Mom thought I needed the boots more. I didn’t need the gun and holster. We’ve all probably stood at the refrigerator door, gazing in, wanting something, but not knowing what. Psychologists tell us that most, if not all, addictions and many anti-social activities stem from the same “hunger” for something and seeking it in all the wrong places. What we want and what we need are often two different things. God knows what we need more than we do ourselves.

In the same way, Jesus knew that the Samaritan woman’s thirst was the hunger and thirst in all of us. It is a hunger and thirst for a relationship with Him which will fill the emptiness of those who ask with the truly filling Bread of Life and Drink of Life. This “food” is not made by bakers or brewers but by the Source of Living Water Himself! Is there a hunger or thirst in your life that is not being quenched? Jesus makes us the same offer He made to the woman at the well: “If you ask, I will give you Living water.” So, don’t just stand there with the door open! Ask the One who can truly satisfy!

PRAYER

“You satisfy the hungry heart with gifts of finest wheat. Come give to us, O saving Lord, the bread of life to eat.” Feed me, Lord, with the things I truly need to satisfy my troubled spirit, the things which will lead me closer to You rather than away from You. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 3:34 — To the humble, he shows favor.

Philippians 2:3 — Do nothing from selfish ambition or deceit, but in humility count others better than yourself.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Kids have a way of humbling us; at least mine did. When Dan was still in high school, the newspaper ran an article about me with a picture. In one of his classes, the teacher asked if he was related to the pastor mentioned in the article. He responded, “Yeh, but I just call him Dad.” In such a short phrase, any thoughts of greatness were put in their place and out of mind. Perhaps we all need someone to keep us humbly in our places. God can do wonders with those humble enough to be molded like clay, but those with “stiff-necked” pride refuse to bend to God’s will and way. Instead of looking to God for direction, they seek their own ambitions and deceits to get their will and their way. May we allow God to mold us so that we can experience His favor in the work to which He has called us.

PRAYER

Almighty God and Father, we bow before You in humble adoration. We know that You created us from the dust of the earth, love us enough to die for us, and care enough about us to be with us always. You, Lord, give us the confidence to come to You in all things, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 8:1 — O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Luke 1:49 — (Mary said:) The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

From my throne room overlooking the known world, I sat between two enormous sentries (10,000-foot tall cedars). I could command them to bow their heads to me, but for some reason, they could only manage it when the wind blew. I directed the war against the giant alien grasshoppers from there. If memory serves, I also defeated the man-eating cow-beasts threatening to overrun the world from that seat of power. However, even as a seven-year-old, I knew my imaginary throne was only make-believe. I realized how tough it was to be a king and how much tougher it must be to be God, trying to keep His creation from the destructive activities of the other “subjects.” Whether it is the vast panorama of God’s creation, seen in sunsets, mountains, and smiles, or the tiniest newborn infant grasping my finger in an incubator as I baptized him in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit a few hours before he went to His Father’s loving arms, the might and majesty of God still awe me! I am humbled to think this Great God Almighty considers you and me worthy to be His children and servants. How about you?

PRAYER

Amazing God, You are so full of love, grace, and grandeur. When I take the time to think of You, I am awed over and over again. Instill me with Your love and grace so I can share them with others and give them a small reflection of Your grandeur in Jesus’ name. Amen.

EPIPHANY

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 11:7 — For your own eyes have seen every great deed that the Lord did.

Matthew 2:10. — When they saw the star, they were filled with great joy.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We stood at the big bay window watching. Our parents told us that Uncle Tony and his family were coming from California to visit. We were excited to see our cousins again. Every time they came in the past, they brought special treats, good stories, new games, and new songs to share. We could hardly wait. Then we saw it. The car was cresting the big hill a half mile away, kicking up a cloud of dust on the dirt road! With shouts of joy, we announced their arrival and were out in the yard waiting when they finally pulled up. The coming of the Lord is a lot like that. The Bible and eyewitnesses who have seen God’s mighty acts in the past stand as testimony to the fact that God always keeps promises. We stand at the edge of tomorrow, straining to see the “stars” - the physical signs of His coming. Sadly we may miss that “coming” because we look down the wrong roads or search for the wrong vehicle, but such mistakes do not hinder the coming of the Lord into our lives. He comes - whether we are ready or not - in the waters of baptism, in the love and grace of friends and family, in the body and blood of Christ, in that “still small voice”! The list goes on. May we be filled with great joy at every “sign” of His presence!!!

PRAYER

Glorious Lord, open our eyes to see Your coming daily. Open our ears to hear Your “still small voice” and Your shouts of “alleluia!” As we open our eyes and ears to receive You, bless us with the courage to share You with those unable to see or hear. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:14b — We have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s only begotten son, full of grace and truth.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 62:6 — God is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

Matthew 7:24 — (Jesus said:) “Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The last time we were in Germany we climbed a small mountain to see the ruins of some castles. They were impressive, even in their ruined state. We also visited a refurbished castle which genuinely impressed us. It was built on a solid rock out of local stone. Its walls were thick enough that trucks could drive along the top. It took direct hits by bombs in WWII to breach their defenses. Military dictators have built themselves bunkers with concrete walls 18 feet thick, designed to withstand a direct nuclear impact. When I think of those fortresses, I think of the solid Foundation on which our faith is built and our God, who is an even stronger defense than any walls made of mere rock or concrete. The blessing for each of us is to know that when we live in the Lord, we live on that Foundation and within the protective walls of that Fortress. Not even a direct hit from a man-made bomb or a satanic attack can dent the walls of God’s love or “separate us from the love of God which is ours in Christ Jesus.” In what will you place your trust?

PRAYER

Our Mighty Fortress and our Defender, thank You for the protection You provide for those who trust in You. When the power of this world threatens to overwhelm us, remind us that Your mighty arm will protect us from all evil and keep us in the hollow of Your hand. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 138:7a — Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me.

Romans 8:35 — Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

As kids, we learned that if we had to walk through the feedlot, there were certain cattle we had to keep an eye on. Some of them could be mean. We had one bull whose presence caused us to take the long way around the fence unless Dad walked with us. When we were helping neighbors, it was even more important to have them point out the ones that were likely to charge us. Having the neighbor walk through the herd with us was always the safest since the cattle knew him and would respect the club he carried! Jesus, Himself, walks with us through this dangerous world - even “the valley of the shadow of death.” Our problem is that we often insist on taking the trip alone instead of asking Jesus to walk with us. Perhaps you need to join me in praying this prayer daily: Lord, there are too many mean-looking creatures and difficult duties for me to manage on my own today. Walk with me to guard me, guide me, and prevent me from stepping into the fertilizer those things produce! Thank you, Jesus. Amen. May you discover the joy of walking with Jesus today!

PRAYER

Thank You, Jesus, for walking with us this day. No matter the obstacles, dangers, or terrors, we know we can rely on Your promised presence to see us through. Guide us on the path that will be best for us, even if it is not the shortest. We pray in Your holy name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 14:26 — In the fear of the Lord, one has strong confidence.

John 1:42 — (Jesus said to Peter:) “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

As a senior in high school, I practiced my double B flat sousaphone in the band room. The call came for Mr. Whacker to leave for a while. C-Band, the beginning band, was supposed to start. He came to my practice room, told me he needed to leave, and asked me to get them started. I was honored - until 76 blaring trombones, 110 squawking clarinets, 2000 budding percussionists, and assorted other instruments of torture arrived to set off a racket that could be heard at the football field a mile away! It is one thing to have a title or position. It is another to have the confidence, the courage, and the knowledge to do something about it. Many of us feel the same way about our position in the body of Christ. We may have learned a few things about our faith years ago, but we don’t feel qualified to “lead the band.” Perhaps we’ve forgotten Who chose us to be His witnesses in all the world! We need to remember that God hasn’t left us. God is still with us to help us do what He called us to do. All we need is some practice. We don’t have to stand before a firing squad or even a whole congregation. All that is asked is that we play the tune God gives us as best we can in the Lord’s symphony. He chose you. Trust that God knows what He’s doing and do it! (By the way, Mr. Whacker returned before a national emergency had to be called, no one went deaf, and I was pretty sure I did not want to be a band director!)

PRAYER

Maker of all Good Music, You chose each of us to play our specific notes and make the melodies, counter-melodies, and harmonies which sing Your Songs. Give us ears to hear Your voice so that Your will may be done in us through the music of Your Universe. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 51:18 — Do good to Zion in your good pleasure.

Luke 19:28 — Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We went “up” to Nebraska for my mother’s funeral. We went “down” to Springfield, Missouri, for our son’s graduation. We went “over” to Alamogordo to visit friends. Our “ups,” “downs,” and “overs” were geographic in nature. When we visited Israel, our guides informed us that Jerusalem sits on a mountain about 3000 feet above sea level. It is hard to believe that the lowest point on the earth’s surface is only about twelve miles away at the Dead Sea. No matter where people are in Israel, they must “go up to” Jerusalem. But “going up to Jerusalem” was not just a physical journey. The Temple, and the city in which it was located, were considered the highest spiritual location on the face of the earth. It was the place where God came down to meet people, hear their prayers, and bless them. The Temple is now gone. The city is divided and war-torn after centuries of conflict. But God was not and is not locked within walls or gates. God is wherever the children of God invite His presence. If that direction is up, we may find ourselves going up to worship at the church downtown, up to our quiet room down in the basement, etc. Where do you go “up” to meet with God?

PRAYER

Ever-present Father, wherever we are and whenever we call on Your holy Name, You are with us. Open our eyes and ears to recognize the signs of Your presence, especially when we feel lonely, hurt, fearful, or upset. Place Your hand upon us, and give us peace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 72:19b — May his glory fill the whole world.

Romans 16:27 — To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The cave was deep. It was at least a mile deep. My sister and I finally made it to the deepest darkness at the far end of the cave. Here, the light of the sun never shined. Here, ancient cave people painted images (that looked much like the stick people in my coloring book). Our torch went out! Every demon of the deep started their slow crawl in our direction. We were doomed! I’m not sure who screamed first. Fortunately, before any demons got close enough to claim their five and six-year-old victims, the brilliant artificial sun came on. It was only a 40-watt bulb, but it lit the small root cellar like daylight. God is light, and God’s light works to fill the world in much the same way as the light in our cave, with even more brilliance. Real demons, real sin, and real evil are revealed for what they are. Darkness has no place to hide. Need a little light in your life? Why not invite the Source of all light to fill you so that your life overflows and reflects God’s light?

PRAYER

Light of the world and Light of our lives, we give You thanks for replacing darkness and fear with Your own Light and Love. Give us a double measure of that Light so that our words and actions reflect Your peace, mercy, and grace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 33:4 — For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.

1 Corinthians 1:9 — God is faithful; by him, you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We almost signed on the dotted line to have our house coated with a revolutionary new process that the salesmen promised would “last a lifetime.” When we called to make the appointment, they had promised to give us a cuckoo clock just for allowing them to show us their product. When they arrived, it was evident that the first promise was only words, making us cautious of their numerous other promises. Before signing, we asked for a day to look at other houses that had used that process and to talk to some of the many “happy” customers. We soon discovered that their promise of a “lifetime guarantee” was only good for the company’s life, which had a history of going out of business every year and starting up under a new name again. On the other hand, God has been in the creation, redemption, and salvation business from the beginning of time. His guarantee is not just for the life of a nasturtium or even the life of a human. God’s promise is good for a life of eternity with His own Son, the total payment. Now, to which promise would you like to cling?

PRAYER

Faithful and Trustworthy God, thank You for all the promises You have made and kept through the centuries. Teach us to follow Your example as we make our promises and commitments. Make us worthy witnesses and models for the world to follow. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

2 Samuel 22:29 — You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord lightens my darkness.

Matthew 5:14, 16 — You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We had to purchase a power backup unit for the church in Nebraska because our church provided the public access channel on cable TV. Every time the lights blinked, all video and play-back equipment had to be reset. That included a CD player and a computer, which require the right combination of button pushing and prayer to make them work. The problem we still have at our house when the lights go out is that several clocks, the TV, and DVD all require a PhD. in kindergarten logic to reset. And they must be reset. Once again, we can thank God that He Himself is the light that isn’t reliant on the power company, the weather, or the goodwill of a repairman. God’s light shines with or without our help. Jesus encourages us to allow the power of God’s light to flow through us, light us up, and reflect His glory. Are you bright enough on your own, or could you use a Power Boost from the Eternal Light and Power Company?

PRAYER

Light of all lights, continue to shine on us and through us. Let us be like Moses, reflecting Your light so brightly that he had to wear a veil. Let our lights shine for all to see that You truly live in us. Guide us in the path You shine on and want us to follow, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Proverbs 16:1 — We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 25:18 — Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.

Matthew 9:2 — And just then, some people were carrying a paralyzed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son, your sins are forgiven.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He sat in my office weeping. He was about to lose his wife, family, and home. He had been kicked out and told to get help. He whined that he didn’t need help. They were the ones who needed help. They needed to understand him. He needed his time, and he needed his space. The fact was his drinking and gambling had put the whole family in jeopardy. His violent temper had everyone living on the edge. It took several weeks for him to hit bottom and finally admit that it was his problem. Once he could make that confession, there were people nearby ready and willing to help. His sin was blocking his healing. It had to be forgiven before his addictions could be dealt with and before his family would even consider healing their relationship with him. Not all illnesses are the direct result of sin. There are many illnesses for which we do not know the cause. But sometimes, Jesus knows what we ourselves may attempt to deny. When that happens, we must seek the grace - the unmerited forgiveness of God, before God can heal our woundedness. How healthy are you? Have something you need to talk to the Lord about?

PRAYER

Gracious and forgiving, Lord, open our hearts and our minds to the possibility and the probability that our problems and our sicknesses stem from our own sinful nature. Walk with us through this painful discovery and bring healing to our souls, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Malachi 1:5 — Great is the Lord beyond the borders of Israel.

Matthew 15:28 — Jesus spoke to the Canaanite woman: “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I was born before the end of WWII, but I grew up in the “Cold War,” “Iron Curtain” era. The threat of the day was “godless communism,” which, we were told, was spreading. Nations were falling under its evil influence like dominoes. There seemed to be an attitude similar to that of ancient nations, that God could be limited by borders (iron curtains), walls, ideologies, or political systems. What amazed church workers as those walls began to fall was the strength of Christians in those places where leaders tried to eradicate this “opiate of the people.”

In many cases, these Christians and their churches were stronger, more committed, and more vibrant than a majority of churches in the “free world.” Yet, under constant threat, they did not take their faith for granted. It was dangerous and costly to be a Christian. The same is true in some parts of the world today. What has become evident is that man-made borders - real, political, philosophical, or even religious - cannot limit God. If God’s Son can reach a woman - a Canaanite woman - a pagan polytheist - or even “godless communists,” is it not possible that God can break all the barriers to come to you? All it takes is an invitation on your part. But, of course, when He comes, sin and all of its deadly results will be washed away with His light. Can you stand it?

PRAYER

Borderless and All-encompassing God, expand our vision to see You active in every corner of our world. Bless and protect those living under persecution for their faith in countries where Christianity is illegal. Let Your Spirit flow over those nations to infuse the love of Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Hosea 14:3c — In you, the orphan finds mercy.

John 14:18 — Christ said: “I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He was an orphan. His father was gone. His mother died giving birth. There wasn’t much hope for this baby. So, my twin brothers adopted him by rubbing him down, drying him off, and feeding him his first meal. His big brown eyes showed loving adoration for these two eight-year-olds. Every time they entered the barn, this lively little calf came running, often bowling both of them over in a heap of laughter. They were his family! In baptism, we, spiritual orphans, have been adopted by God. God loves us, cares for us, gives us our daily bread, and has made provision for our eternal future. We are no longer orphans! We have a Father - with every good quality and none of the bad - who dotes on us like the most loving human fathers do with their firstborn. So, when God enters our “barn,” our worship space, do we run to meet Him? Do we bowl God over with our affection, causing Him to giggle and laugh with us and for us? If not, why not? Maybe we’ve forgotten our spiritual orphanage! In Christ, we are no longer orphans. We are part of His family and have an eternal home that no one can ever take away. Thank God!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting me as Your child. Thank You for the great joy I experience when I remember Your all-embracing love, which I neither deserve nor earn. As You bless me, give me the courage and strength to bless those who don’t know You or Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 9:26 — Lord, destroy not the people ... whom you redeemed in your greatness.

Romans 10:12 — There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I didn’t think about prejudice and bigotry when I was a kid. If you had defined them for me in country school, I would have denied it. But the truth is we were steeped in a religion of “we are better than they are.” It was obvious to me that some of us whose parents owned farms were a shade better than others who rented. We who were German descendants were, without question, most to be envied, especially over those who had to admit to being Bohemians or even Swedes. We didn’t know any non-Christians, except those who didn’t bother going to church, but since some of our own families fell into that category, we had to make exceptions. Now, the distinction between Roman Catholics and Lutherans was another matter. Each side was convinced the other was going to hell without passing “Go” or collecting anything! With age, travel, and expanding horizons, I discover most of those divisions sadly inadequate and even disgusting. God created all people of all races, religions, and nationalities. God’s great compassion loves all people. St. Paul was not a Universalist in his breaking down of distinctions. All have the same Lord, but not all call on the name of the Lord. All can receive the same grace-filled gifts from God, but not all want to spend eternity with Him. Yes, God could redeem all, but only those who call on Him will have the benefits that only He can bestow. Have you been calling on Him lately?

PRAYER

Lord, You love every human created in Your image. Forgive us for constructing barriers to brotherhood and treating others with prejudice and bigotry. Let Your love for them flow through us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 139:11-12 — If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day.

John 1:5 — The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We built a snow cave in the drift, nearly covering the dirt road north of our country school. It took all morning, lunch, and afternoon recesses to build. The blizzard had left a hard crust over the drift, which spanned most of the road. When school let out at 4:00, we scrambled into our cave instead of heading straight home before darkness settled in. It was warm in there - warmer than the biting January wind outside. We were safe from giant snow monsters, protected from alien ray guns, and hidden from the searching eyes of communist spies. As darkness set in, our world became darker and more fearsome. Who knows what creatures hide in the depths of snow caves?!! Just as we were about to escape their fearsome claws, the roof caved in and my brother, Mike, came tumbling in with it. The most beautiful sunset greeted our eyes as we emerged from our darkness, shaking snow out of our coats and crawling to freedom. Sometimes we feel down and dark - like in a cave, but rather than seeking the light, we wallow in our darkness. Only when light breaks into our darkness, do we see the light. Often we cannot break out ourselves. We need the light of the Spirit, sent by God through other ministers of mercy, to break into our gloom before we can see that God’s Light was there all along. All our efforts only bury us deeper into the darkness we are trying to overcome. Why not allow God to enter your “snow cave” to give you His Light?

PRAYER

God of Light, remind us often that Your Light shines in the darkness, even when we can’t see it. You entered that darkness at creation and, with Your light, You bring order into the chaos that seeks to smother us. Let Your light shine in us through Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 13:6 — I will sing to the Lord because he has dealt bountifully with me.

1 Corinthians 14:15 — I will sing praise with the spirit, and I will sing praise with the mind also.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Little did I know how important a gift my roommate awakened in me when he returned from a meeting to inform me that he had “volunteered” me to play guitar and sing at a nursing home in Minneapolis. We were first-year seminary students living and working in a mortuary. I liked to sing but had never played guitar, and I certainly didn’t own one. So, we fashioned a workable guitar with a borrowed instrument, used strings, and the sharp edged of a plastic ruler. One lesson from a friend and four chords later, I joined the group of singers making a joyful “noise” to a room full of aging residents - many of whom, I was happy to know, couldn’t hear with perfect pitch. Since then, I’ve learned a few more chords and bought a different guitar. I have discovered that whenever I sing to the Lord, His blessings multiply, despite my mistakes and my uncertainties. God is blessed when I sing, and those who hear are blessed through my praises. So, you don’t play guitar? Do you say you don’t even have a guitar? Not to worry!!! You have a voice. You have a gentle hand and a warm hug to share, don’t you? Why not sing praises to God with them? I know some very lonely people in nursing homes and shut up in their own homes who would love to sing a “love” song with you. Why not give it a try?

PRAYER

You, O Lord, have made music the universal language of Your whole creation. Therefore, bring forth the melodies and harmonies that will praise You and prepare us to participate in the great chorus with Your angels in heaven. Make their songs our joy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Leviticus 19:34 — The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you.

Romans 12:13b — Practice hospitality.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I was an alien. I came from a far-distant planet called Nebraska, where it was believed that sand storms obliterated the sun for days on end, where the Indians still collected scalps, where trees were a rare sight in the unsettled land, and where farmers still used horses and donkeys to farm. I was in Baltimore, Maryland, working as a youth director in a church of sophisticated city dwellers, most of whom had never been west of the Appalachians. Without a doubt, I spoke a strange dialect of English and had weird requests for such things as “pop” (soda to them). But from the first day, they took me in, taught me the language, showed me the ropes, and made me one of them. I may have been a little strange, but they showed tremendous respect and welcoming love. Jimmy and Nancy will always be dear to my heart. The Kingdom of God is a lot like that. In so many ways, God invites us, sinful aliens, into the Kingdom as members of God’s family. Once forgiven and renewed, we are no longer called strangers and aliens. God calls us “Children and heirs with Christ.” Therefore, as God has blessed us, God calls us to bless others - to welcome them as representatives of our Father in heaven. Those who believe and are baptized are no longer aliens and outsiders. With us, they are members of the family of God. May we learn hospitality as God practices it.

PRAYER

Warm and welcoming God, we come to You as outsiders, covered with the filth of sin. But You, O Lord, wash us clean in the waters of baptism, hold us close to You, and welcome us as Your dear children. Help us reflect that same welcoming grace to others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:14 — For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 31:13b — I will comfort them and give them gladness for sorrow.

Matthew 20:32-34 — Jesus stood still and called to (the two blind men), saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

When she saw me, a tear trickled down her cheek. I could not see more than that. After surgery on my nose, my eyes had been covered. When the covering was removed, it took a while to adjust. I looked like a reversed image of a raccoon or the Lone Ranger - white mask, black eyes. Without my glasses, it was hard to see the mirror they held up. Despite my limited vision, the compassionate tear spoke volumes of her love and concern for me. My helpmate felt helpless to ease my discomfort. Yet, in her, I saw the compassion of Christ reach out to touch and heal. My healing was not instantaneous, but each day a new reason to rejoice came to the surface. The compassion of God often comes to us in the disguise of the eyes of those who allow Christ to live in and through them. In our clamor for more sensationalism, it is possible that we miss the meat of compassion sent to us in flesh and bone. Even those walking beside Jesus, the very Son of God, often overlooked the obvious. Have you been blind to the movements of the Master in your midst? Open your eyes of faith, and thank God when you see those incredible moments!

PRAYER

Our great and glorious Physician, thank You for the healing hand You place upon us, even as You bless the doctors, nurses, family, friends, and pastors who come to let Your Spirit flow through them. With every breath we take, breathe Your healing spirit over us and into us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 3:27 — Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to do it.

James 2:15-16 — If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “God in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Many times in our travels, we have met people with severe needs. On a trip to Paraguay, I met a therapist from Bolivia who worked for a church social agency but was so poorly paid he had to beg for money to support his family. On a trip to Germany, we met a Christian student from Pakistan whose family lives under constant threat from Muslim persecution. His need was for theological books so he could finish his training to become a pastor. A woman I know in our community is desperately lonely and simply needs someone to stop by to visit from time to time. I’m sure my list, like yours, could fill many pages. The Word of the Lord challenges us by asking what we will do about the needs of those we could help. Yes, occasionally, we will be taken advantage of or even feel like fools for Christ, but we must do more than talk. We must respond to the needs with more than words. A happy thought won’t put food on a starving person’s table or shoes on a poor child’s feet. Are your own needs so great that you couldn’t become God’s answer to someone’s prayers? Why not keep your eyes and ears open to the needs of others, and respond according to the blessings with which God has blessed you?

PRAYER

Generous God, it is easier to pray for people in need than to do something to help them. Therefore, give us the courage and the resources to act in love as we know Jesus would act, for we pray in His name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 7:7-8 — It is not because you were more numerous than any other people - for you were the fewest of all peoples. It was because the Lord loved you.

Romans 11:29 — The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Our country school was the largest country school I knew of when we had 16 students. At least, that’s what we believed. It seems like an inherited idea for most of us to think of ourselves as belonging to the biggest and best of everything. But the real world helps us wake up to facts. There were a lot of larger country schools around. In the same way, WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) are not the largest group of people in the world. Size of group, nationality, faith community, or even family, has little to do with God’s identification with them. Christ was born into the “least of all the tribes” and identified himself with “the least of these my brothers.” The privilege of God’s call to be His people, the gift of God’s loving grace, and the promises of God for our eternity have one source. It is not because we are so numerous or significant, but because God is so GREAT and loving. As Martin Luther wrote, “therefore, we surely ought to thank and praise, serve and obey Him.” Humbling thought, isn’t it? God is all, and we can only respond accordingly! How will you respond to God’s greatness?

PRAYER

Great and awesome God, when we take a serious look at our human nature, we are amazed that You consider us worthy of Your love and grace! Yet, the message of Your Word is clear. You truly do love us with everlasting love. We give You thanks as we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 2:7 — The Lord, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings.

Acts 3:26 — When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I was king of the universe once. I was nine or ten at the time, but the wisest king since King Solomon—and wealthy too. I wasn’t into wives and concubines at that age. I didn’t need girls around to cause problems, except for my sister, who did not want to be a useless queen. She wanted to be one of the warriors guarding and protecting the pile of “straw-like” gold on which my throne rested in the hayloft. Being a king was rather dull. Sure I owned everything, but sitting there while everyone else had fun protecting it from thieves and gangsters only goes so far. Even as an adult, I recognize the limited, relative value of great wealth. God has already blessed me with everything I really need—even when I think I want something more. But the greatest blessing God has bestowed on me has nothing to do with earthly wealth. The greatest blessing is Christ, my Lord. Adopting me into His family at baptism, God made me His own and a brother of Jesus, making it possible for me to inherit everything that Jesus inherits! Once again, under the Kingship of Jesus, I am a king of the universe. That is the blessing of all who repent and believe in Christ Jesus. What a privilege I have as I write! I’m writing to brothers and sisters of Christ—kings and queens under the King of kings! It doesn’t get any better than that!

PRAYER

King of kings and true Ruler of the Universe, we thank You for the multitude of blessings You bestow on us daily. Give us the wisdom to use those gifts and share them so that others will know how vast and amazing Your love for all of Your creation is. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 25:8 — Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces.

Matthew 26:75 — Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

When I was in first grade, my sister was in kindergarten. I got a little carried away at the sandbox (Ok, I spilled sand big time!), and the teacher sentenced me to stay after school. When school let out, my sister thought I would have to stay all night. When I found her 15 minutes later, she was standing on the dirt road that led to our house a mile and a quarter away, weeping great crocodile tears. She thought I was going to jail and she would have to walk all the way home by herself. Such tears of sorrow, fear, and hurt flow from the eyes of those who lose loved ones or must separate from them in one way or another. Remorse over things (sins) that separate us from God or others can turn on the faucet also. God’s promise for us—perhaps God’s image of the perfect world for us—is that we will live in perfect harmony with Him and others so that nothing comes between us and causes us to weep. The promise is sure: when Christ comes to reign, there will never again be any need for tears. Our closeness to Him and those who love Him will be eternal! Feeling lonely and left behind? God has a solution that works. Why not give it a try?

PRAYER

Comforting and consoling, Lord, wrap Your loving arms around us when our spirits sag and our souls weep. Remind us of Your forgiving grace and Your deep desire to welcome us back to You. Give us the courage to be Your arms and to do the same for others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 41:4 — O Lord, be gracious to me, heal me, for I have sinned before you.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 — For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Nothing is more miserable for me than to be on the “bad side” of someone with whom I have to work. I discovered that early on in my education. It was not good to be on the “bad side” of Mom or Dad, or for that matter, any of my teachers. While working in the music store in Norfolk, Nebraska, during my college days, I got on the “bad side” of one of the men with whom I had to work closely. After a few days of silent treatment or being snapped at for little things, I had enough. I decided the job wasn’t worth it if I was miserable, so I went to the man and asked for a truce. I apologized for anything I said or did that made him angry and asked if we could start over. Surprisingly, instead of having me fired, he took my hand and thanked me for talking to him. He admitted that he was miserable too. We all stand before an awesome God, guilty of every sin of thought, word and deed - on God’s “bad side” - separated from his loving forgiveness by our pride or unwillingness to confess and change. God, on His part, longs to have us back in His loving embrace. No doubt God is as miserable as we are by the separation. God wants us to return to wholeness and oneness with Him. Are you miserable enough to have a little talk with God yet?

PRAYER

Gracious and forgiving God, break down the barriers we put up which prevent us from returning to You. Give us the courage to make peace with You and others with whom we have been at odds. Wipe the slate clean as we remember our baptism and Your great love in Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 15:1 — A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

James 1:19 — Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We slipped and slid over a muddy road to visit one of the neighbors, getting stuck in his long driveway. I was probably about seven at the time. Since it was a cold, windy, late-winter day, Dad made my sister and me stay in the car while he walked the rest of the way to their farmhouse. He returned after a few minutes and said he’d have to walk home (about a mile) to get the tractor to pull us out. The neighbor left by his other driveway when he got to their house. I concluded they left so that they wouldn’t have to help us. Dad, on the other hand, came to a totally different conclusion. He believed they didn’t know we were stuck in their lane. He was right. I was wrong. Too often, we jump to conclusions, become angry, and hold grudges that separate us from our neighbors. I know that when I let anger rule my thinking, I am usually wrong, and I seldom (maybe never) have solved a problem by allowing my anger to dictate my actions. God must have infinite patience with me because, if He didn’t, I’d be in deep trouble all the time. Jesus asked us to think before we “throw the first stone.” Good advice for us as we continue our faith journey through this new year.

PRAYER

How easy it is, Lord, to jump to conclusions that cause pain and separation from You, our family members, friends, and even total strangers. Open our hearts and minds to put the most favorable construction on situations so that we do not cause pain to anyone. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 1:17 — The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 84:11 — For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

Acts 2: 46-47 — Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I discovered that the father of a friend of mine was the author of two books I had read and appreciated. When I mentioned it to my friend, he told his father about me and brought back an invitation for me to come to his home to visit. Of course, I was thrilled to meet the man, but I was amazed to be welcomed right into his messy kitchen, offered a Coke, and treated like one of his family. He was in the process of writing another book, so he invited me to look at the “proofs” and pictures that would go into the book. He even asked my opinion—as if he believed what I thought carried some weight! In much the same way, that is the joy of our invitation from Christ. He invites us to His personal living quarters in the Presence of the Father! Isn’t it great to know that God’s most treasured desire is to have us in His holy habitation?!!!

PRAYER

Welcoming and most loving God, You welcomed us into Your family in baptism, and You hold us, dear, to You in every way. So forgive us for taking our Friendship with You for granted. Show us those You want us to invite into Your circle of friends, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 4:2 — You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take anything away from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God.

Matthew 5:17 — (Jesus said:) “Do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Sue and I like to play dominoes and some card games. We are often invited to play with different groups who have, in turn, played with other groups. Each time we play, it seems, we must learn a few “different” rules. It certainly takes the boredom out of the games but can also be confusing and cause some rather hilarious mistakes. It is not unusual to hear someone in the group ask the best question of all: “who is making up the rules this time.” Of course, someone is bound to reply, “we just make them up as we go.” While it can be fun playing games with friends that way, it would be truly terrifying if the police “made up the laws as they went” or if we didn’t know the laws of God because they kept changing. But God, in His infinite Wisdom, has given us a law that does not change with the times. It is a law within which we discover great security and stability. In Christ Jesus, we discover the basis of all the law and the prophets: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. In doubt about your way of life? Wondering if it is covered in God’s law book? Simply ask: Does what I’m doing/thinking/saying show my love and respect for God? Does what I’m doing/thinking/saying show the love and respect of my neighbor that I want to receive? Those are the basics. What more do we need?

PRAYER

Giver of the Law of Love, thank You for the basics on which all human laws are or should be based. Forgive us when we add our prejudices and bigotries to twist Your perfect Law to fit our “game.” Guide us into the Way, the Truth, and the Life You want us to have, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

1 Samuel 12:22 — It has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself.

Luke 7:16 — God has looked favorably on his people.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

What pleased me as a kid were the simple things. I was pleased by the piece of dead wood that looked like a rifle and the broken machine in the shelter belt I could use as a spaceship to fly myself to the moon. The compliment Hattie Fulner gave me because of how I colored a picture of Jesus in Sunday School made me happy. The sound of harmony I could make with a comb and a piece of waxed paper lifted my spirit, as did the surprise gifts that arrived in the mail from a faraway aunt. I was pleased by the pleasant people calling at meal time and their stories about Jesus and His miracles. Perhaps it didn’t take too much to please me, but I believe it mirrors how God is pleased. Looking at a sinful world, we might wonder how God could find any pleasure in people who are stiff-necked, disobedient, defiant, and blood-thirsty enough to kill His own Son. But the joy of the heavens is multiplied by the return of a single lost sheep or a single lost sinner. His favor rests on anyone who pleases God by returning to His grace. What pleases you? Does God’s love please you as much as you please God?

PRAYER

How wonderful it is to know how easy it is to please You, O Lord. Turn us when we stray from Your path. Guide us with the Light of Christ to those words and actions which please You most. Make us instruments of Your love, leading others to Your pleasing grace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 113:5-6 — Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?

Romans 8:32 — He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us will he not with him lavish upon us everything else?

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

In the days before light pollution, when the street lights of most towns were dimmer, the lights of the town six miles from our farm didn’t show. We spent many summer nights star gazing. We marveled at the shooting stars wondering what would happen if one landed in the pasture across the lane from the house. We imagined walking on the Milky Way Bridge, which we were certain connected the earth with heaven. We guessed the names of the angels whose stars twinkled in the night sky. We wondered if Grandma was somewhere among the stars baking bread for Jesus to serve to the hungry. We didn’t know theology, physics, or space technology. We still wished upon a star, concluding the wish with a silent “amen.” What we did know was that God was bigger than all that we could see, and God had created it all without breaking a sweat! We knew we were tiny little specks—as tiny as the specks of stars. But like each of those stars, we were loved by God, Mom, and Dad. The shooting stars made us think of the story of Jesus coming from heaven. Even as an adult, I scan the sky with awe, ponder the coming of Jesus, and wonder that He loved me enough to give up the glory of heaven, even briefly, to save me and finally die for me. I give thanks that God lavishes His love on me every day. Have you done any star-gazing lately? Maybe it’s time you did.

PRAYER

Great God Almighty, as an adult, I know a tiny bit more about stars and the universe, and it boggles my mind! The tiny pin-pricks of light I see with my naked eye may be whole galaxies greater than the one in which we live. Help us appreciate and share the little bit we know about You with the same kind of awe, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
