WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 9:5 — For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.

Matthew 26:52 — (Jesus said:) “Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Playing war games was fun when we were kids because we could act out our aggressions by “blowing our enemies to smithereens.” War, even now, is the by-product of sin. Someone wants what someone else has or is bound and determined to force them to think or act the way “we” want it to be. Among some of the oldest existing writings is a Sumerian (pre-Christian, even pre-Hebrew) saying: “No children are born who are sinless.” Even the pagans had a doctrine of original sin! Having been a child once, I must confess to that truth. As kids, we wanted things “our” way, no matter how unfair or harmful it might have been to us or others. The Old Testament and New Testament remind us that the end results of harming others, for whatever reason, are our own worst nightmare. The Psalmist urges us to pray for peace, especially the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). May that be our daily prayer, and may it begin with us!

PRAYER

Forgiving Author of true Shalom, remove from us our love of sinning and our love of war. Give us, instead, a love of cooperation and reconciliation. Let Your Peace, which passes all human understanding, rest around us and in us as we seek to serve You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 12:20 — Those who counsel peace have joy.

Matthew 5:9 — Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

On the big radio in the corner of my grandparent’s living room, I heard the announcement that WWII had ended. I was too young to appreciate what it meant, but the spirit of joy that my parents, grandparents, and neighbors shared was contagious. There was more joy over the end of the Korean War, but we only breathed a sigh of relief when the war in Viet Nam was called to an end. There have been numerous wars since, and each caused our nation to pay a high cost to human lives and suffering. On the horizon, more wars threaten every day. “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me....” Perhaps that old song needs to be revived for the sake of our warring world. The song reminds us that war truly does begin “with me.” Sadly, those who decide to go to war sit peacefully in safe, secure, comfortable conditions while sending others to kill and be killed. At war within them are reasons for their decisions. Self-defense is one thing, but pre-emptive aggression is another. May we all become peacemakers with our God and one another so that the world may see that peace truly begins with us.

PRAYER

God of grace and glory, help us realize that true peace and true glory only come from You. Therefore, place within our leaders and us a yearning for true peace and reconciliation. Send Your Holy Spirit to the hearts of all so that we may indeed be called children of God, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 143:8 — Teach me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

John 12:26 — (Jesus said:) “Whoever would serve me must follow me.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

After Grandma Sydow died, we moved to the home-place, two miles from our home, and lived with Grandpa. He wasn’t always the easiest person to get along with, but one of the upsides was that he knew a lot about card games. He went into town to play cards almost every day. In the evening, we would beg him to play with us. These were the days when the black and white TV couldn’t be counted on for more than wavy lines and static if the weather wasn’t just right. Grandpa dealt a hand for my sister and me, then looked at each of our hands and explained what we should play and why. Often he would tell us to follow the lead of the person who started or our partner. If we had big cards, it was always tempting to play them anyway. Grandpa, not big on patience, would huff, “Don’t you have anything smaller? Are you following the lead?” The one “lead” he absolutely insisted on was fairness and honesty. He caught me cheating by switching cards when I thought he wasn’t looking. He quietly gathered all the cards and put them away, declaring sadly, “Nobody likes to play with a cheat.” It was several days before he would accept my apology and promise never to cheat again and play cards with me. It was a lesson that has lasted my whole life. Jesus invites us to follow Him. Have you been playing “fair” with Jesus and others? Have you been asking that once famous question, “What Would Jesus Do?” Why not pay close attention to your Lord and Teacher today in all you do?

PRAYER

True and Faithful Lord, teach us to play the “game of life” fairly so that family, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike will be given the benefits of Your love. Open our hearts to serving You as we serve the needs of others instead of “cheating” them of Your grace. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Luke 13:29 — Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE

Genesis 49:25 — God ...will help you, ...the Almighty who will bless you with blessings from heaven above.

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Many were the times when I envied my city cousins. They could go swimming when they wanted. They could play ball whenever they felt like it. It seemed as if the list could go on and on. I believed that, until I spent a week with them and discovered how limited they were. They didn’t have any decent jungles, castles, or wildernesses to explore. They had to get permission from everyone to enter castles and forts. They didn’t have a single mountain or shark-infested river to cross. After one week, I realized just how fortunate I was. I had it all and then some! Those of us who have a good relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, have that same advantage. Other things may look glamorous or glitzy, but we have the real thing. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing from here to eternity! We may grow accustomed and insensitive to what we have, but when we realize what we do have, we can rejoice and be glad in it. Our jungles, mountains, castles, and alligator ponds may seem terrifying at times, but God has blessed us with His presence in Jesus, whose rod and staff guide us and guard us if we invite Him to join us for the journey. So, if you’re unhappy with your journey, stop forcing your way on your own, and let Christ lead. You’ll never be bored again!!!

PRAYER

God of exciting adventures, open our eyes to the wonders of excitement through which our paths take us. Walk with us to guide us and protect us. Help us appreciate the joy of the journey You are taking us on. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 130:4 — But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be revered.

Ephesians 5:21 — Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

“You’re not my boss!” she declared as she slammed the door on the way out of the house. I was the oldest, and I’m sure I thought I was the wisest brother at age nine. I was left in charge of the house while Mom was out gathering eggs and feeding the chickens. I told my sister to sweep up a mess in the kitchen. We were supposed to watch our three younger brothers and pick up the house. Sibling rivalry peaked, and we locked horns! You can probably imagine the arguments when Mom finally did come in! Sadly, many adults never outgrow that attitude in their marriages or in their spiritual relationships in the church. St. Paul uses both illustrations in his letter, encouraging mutual subjection. This particular verse is often unheard by men who like the phrase in which he describes what that means. They want to think the message is only for wives to be subject to husbands. Reread verse 21!!! In the church, our relationships need to be kept in the same light. We are called on to be subject to one another out of reverence to Christ. I’m not the boss. You’re not the boss. Christ is! We dare not forget it, lest we get “bossy” and offend one another. Who is the “boss” in your life?

PRAYER

You alone, O Lord, are in charge of the Universe You created. You alone deserve our whole-hearted reverence and obedience. Forgive us when we usurp Your rule by placing ourselves above others. Guide us in mutually serving You by serving the needs of others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 44:8 — Do not fear or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses!

Acts 26:16 — (Saul heard the voice of Jesus:) “Get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

When I was in Jr. college, Pastor Jobman, my confirmation pastor, asked a friend of mine and me to fill in for him in the pulpit one Sunday. Keith and I each prepared to preach a sermon. We were both a bundle of nerves as we prepared. It was a first for both of us. A lot of time and prayer went into preparing for what turned out to be about a 10-minute sermonette. I don’t remember the sermon I preached. I don’t even have a copy of it. I do remember the thanks I received and the sense that God was asking me, “What were you nervous about? Wasn’t that what I called you to do?” Our human tendency is to take on too much, as if it was all us, and fail to recognize that what is really important is all God. Whether it is a sermon to preach, a life-mate to find (or who needs to find us), a job to find or hold on to, a farm or business to run, or any number of other important events in our lives, it would help if we would remember that they belong to God. If they are important to God, and if we agree with God to set a goal, it shall be. Fearful warriors can win wars, timid leaders can be made strong, the help-mate God wants for you will enter your life, the words will come, enemies will become closest friends, and God’s Will will be fulfilled. So what’s causing you to sweat nails? Maybe it’s time to find out what God wants to happen!

PRAYER

Lord God Almighty, I know that You indeed are in charge, and You are the One who guides me in the right direction. So forgive me for trying to take control of things over which I have no control. Help me trust You and follow Your lead in all things, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

1 Kings 3:5, 9  — (The Lord said to Solomon:) “Ask what I should give you.” (Solomon said:) “Give your servant, therefore, an understanding mind.”

Hebrews 3:12 — Take care, brothers and sisters, that none of you may have an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

What is the number one, most important thing in your life? When I was five, it was my Caterpillar tractor with rubber treads. When I was nine, it was my Roy Rogers gun & holster set. When I was thirteen, it was the watch I received for confirmation. When I was sixteen, it was my first car—the one Dad bought from Grandpa for me to drive to school didn’t count. When I was in college, “things” were replaced by people. Sue came into my life and gradually became more important to me than anything else. I must confess I didn’t always make her feel or believe she was more important than friends or work. Developing an “understanding mind (heart)” takes time and maturity. As time and maturity helped me “grow up,” I perceived another “most important” in my life. God had always been there, almost like a wallflower longing to dance. The more I loved and “danced with” Sue, the more I came to appreciate the rich imagery of the Bible describing the relationship God wants to have with each of us. It is like a marriage in which no one and nothing is more important than the one to whom we have committed ourselves. What is the number one, most important thing in your life? Has your relationship with God taken a beating because of busyness or business? Maybe it’s time to make some changes or to recommit yourself to doing what you can to make it even better.

PRAYER

Lord of my life, forgive me when other things or even other people become more important to me than You. At the same time, help me to remember that in serving other people, I am serving You. So help me keep my priorities straight, and I follow the example of Jesus, my Lord. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 121:5-6 — The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

1 Peter 5:6 — Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I knew him as a friendly face who loved to joke and laugh. I knew him as a man who seemed to have time to help anyone in need. I knew him as a quiet, wise man who only offered his wisdom when asked, but always had insights that made me think. I think of him now as a man I truly wish I had gotten to know even better, but that cannot be. As little as I knew him, he touched me enough that tears came to my eyes at his funeral. They were tears of regret, tears of sympathy for his family, and yet, tears of happiness for the humble man who would now be “exalted,” lifted up by the mighty hand of God. I thank God for Joe and see how many of his good qualities remind me of my father. My father and Joe may not have received the recognition they deserved in life - not that they would have wanted it. But the Lord, their “keeper,” has seen the humility of their hearts, and I can rejoice once more that they have received their reward “in due time.” May we learn from their example and pass it on to every generation.

PRAYER

Blessed Redeemer, thank You for sending special people into our lives to give us a glimpse of Your love and wisdom. Open our eyes to see these people as messengers from You, and give us the wisdom to pay attention to what they have to teach us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Job 9:4 — God is wise in heart and mighty in strength - who has resisted him and succeeded?

1 Corinthians 1:21 — For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

It was a power struggle. There could be no other name for it. I knew I was right, and he was wrong. So what if he had taught algebra for many years, and this was only my first algebra course? It was a waste of time to write down all the steps my mind went through to come up with an answer. If it was right, who really cared? He was insistent that I comply with the instructions and show my work; besides, my answer was wrong! Grudgingly, I did as I was told and was reluctantly surprised to get the correct answer. We, humans, are like that with God too. Instead of relying on God’s will, God’s strength, God’s grace, God’s way, we bang our heads against a wall again and again because “things just aren’t working out the way they should.” There is only one source of Wisdom, one source of Truth, and one source of Power. God, in His infinite wisdom, hasn’t given it all to us to waste (as He gave Solomon wisdom which, later in life, went unused). God, instead, offers to share what is needed with anyone wise enough to ask. How wise are you?

PRAYER

God of Wisdom and Might, speak to our hearts to take away our reluctance to do things Your way. Our sinful natures reach for the “forbidden fruit” and strike out on paths that seem right for us. Draw us back to what You know is best for us as we seek to fulfill Your Will, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

Revelation 15:3 — Great and amazing are your deeds, Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, King of the nations.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

“Look! Quick! You’re not going to believe this!” My wife was staring out the window of a train in Germany at the all-time most beautiful double-rainbow and sunset we had ever seen. I have a picture to prove it. Both of us had been very tired from traveling and almost slept through it. As we watched the rain-washed landscape streaming by, we could not help but stop to say, “Thank you, God!” We have also encountered signs of God’s grace and beauty in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the prairies of Montana, the mountains of Washington, the seacoasts of Oregon and California, and the High Plains Desert of New Mexico. But they paled in comparison with the healthy smile of an infant, whom doctors nearly gave up for dead a few months before, or the gift of time a stranger gave us as he changed our tire one damp and cold December night. God’s rich blessings and loving care have been with us in so many other times and places that I burst with joy as they come to mind. How easy it is to forget our God’s great and marvelous deeds! Perhaps every day should be a mini-thanksgiving. Why not make yourself a list of those blessings as you go to bed each night? Let us “count our blessings instead of sheep.”

PRAYER

Great and amazing God, we are awed by the beauty of Your creation. We are even more amazed by the love You shower upon us daily, especially in the forgiveness, life, and salvation You give us through Jesus, our Lord and Savior. In His name, we pray. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:5 — Come and see what God has done; he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

SCRIPTURE

Daniel 6:11 — Daniel continued to go to his house, which had windows in its upper room open toward Jerusalem, and to get down on his knees three times a day to pray to his God and praise him.

James 5:16b — The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I grew up praying at mealtime and bedtime. It was what we did at our house. It was a family ritual. It was not until I had my own children that I truly appreciated and understood how important those prayers were to our family. They were our instant, wireless connection with a power greater than anything in our world. I vaguely remember my mother’s prayers as she laid her Vicks Vapo rubbed hands on my chest when I had trouble sleeping because of a cold. But my children had to remind me—their father—the pastor—to ask the Father for help when they weren’t feeling well. Sometimes I felt inadequate and unworthy of my office of father or pastor because I judged that the prayers of my own children were more effective than mine. Yet, they grew up with a connection to their heavenly Father from the day of their baptism, and they never lost the relationship or their child-like faith to believe. Those were indeed the prayers of the righteous, and I can thank God for the many miracles they produced. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all keep our connection and our child-like faith in the God who is more willing to give than we are to ask or receive? We can, you know. It just takes practice. Why not start right now?!!!

PRAYER

Here I am again, Lord, Your little child in faith. I come to You confident that, like a loving parent, many times more compassionate than even the best of human parents, You are anxious to hear me and answer my petitions in the way You know is best for me. Thank You, Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 10:7 — Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For that is your due.

Acts 5:29 — Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than human authority.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I went over the directions for the tenth time. Either the directions were wrong, or I was making a wrong turn somewhere—and I was going to be late. I had left early and had driven around for more than a half hour looking for a mailbox that never appeared. I finally returned to my starting place, followed the directions to the letter, and still ended up at the same dead end. A man in a pick-up truck stopped at a crossroad to ask if I needed help. My pride wanted to say, “No, I’m fine.” But the practical side of me asked the question, “Where am I, and where is this mailbox?” I discovered that I had written down the wrong direction. I had written down one left turn that should have been a right and could have wandered through the Loess Hills of western Iowa for hours, maybe days, and never found the hidden farm for which I was searching. How much like that are we when it comes to spiritual directions? Sometimes we get one small turn wrong and throw away the map. We may spiritually wander aimlessly or even take an entirely different path. God has given us a road map that is proven and trustworthy—His own Son. We don’t always interpret the map correctly, but the map-Maker is One we can trust to lead us to our eternal destination—Home! Whose directions are you going to follow?

PRAYER

Faithful God, as You led Abraham to a new land, You led Moses in the wilderness, as You led Your people back from exile in Babylon, and as You led wise men to Bethlehem, lead us on our journey back to You. Keep us faithful to Your “map” and Your Word found in Jesus, our Shepherd and Guide. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 63:9 — In his love and in his pity, he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Ephesians 1:4 — He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He was not a big man. He was less than five feet tall, but his growl made most people follow his orders without question. Elmer was the janitor of the first church I served, where we had a pre-school. Some people thought he worked twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, because it seemed as if he was there anytime anyone was in the building. He could be found taking naps on tables in unused rooms occasionally. But for all of his gruffness, he had a softer side. At every wedding, Elmer would be there in the shadows, dressed up with his clip-on tie, with a tear in his eye, as one of his girls walked down the aisle. The pre-school teachers told of his grandfatherly help with the children and how he always had a smile for them, would occasionally drop off treats, and would be the one to whom crying children would gravitate when they needed a hug. Elmer didn’t have to work so many hours or help with so many projects, but he chose to because he loved the Lord, and he loved the Lord’s children. Isn’t it good to know that God chose you and loves you in that way too? So, with joyful thanksgiving, why not do the same today for someone—anyone of any age?

PRAYER

Father of all, we give You thanks for the intense love and compassion You lavish upon us. Even when we act as wayward children, You stand ready to welcome us back to Your gracious arms. Guide us to those who long for Your touch and Your Word through us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Exodus 3:11-12 — Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” God said, “I will be with you.”

Matthew 10:25-26 — (Jesus said:) “It is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher and the slave like the master. So have no fear of mankind.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Most people do not realize the turmoil and struggle pastors experience in preparation for preaching a sermon. Even I, who did the preaching every week, didn’t identify it for what it was. In my early years, I thought of it as “stage fright” or “butterflies,” and to be honest, that is always there. I blamed some of the anxiety on fear of saying the wrong thing or making a fool of myself. But there has always been more to it than that. Early one Sunday, after I had been preaching for several years, I sat alone in the dark sanctuary, lit only with a signal candle, feeling utterly drained. It had been a long, difficult week with little preparation time. Eyes closed, I was close to giving up and calling off worship! In my quiet prayers, I had to admit that I was drained, with nothing more to say or give. Then, a peace washed over me, and I knew (no, I didn’t hear an audible voice) it was OK. I was not preparing to preach my words. I was only the mouthpiece of His Word. I had a moment of absolute panic at that thought, but it passed with the conviction that God could use whatever I had prepared and mold it into what He wanted people to hear. To my amazement (O me of little faith!), several people commented on how meaningful my sermon was that day. Since then, I’ve done my part, preparing and letting God do the rest. Pride, fear, and anxiety still grab me, but God does what I cannot. Whether it’s a sermon or a word of encouragement to someone in need, we all have that promise from God: You may not think you are important enough to speak, but I will be with you. Don’t fear what others will say or do! What is there in your life which holds you back from fulfilling your mission? God wants to help!

PRAYER

Merciful God, when I center my words and mission on me, I have every reason to fear and panic. Help me, Lord, to focus my attention on You and the Good News You chose me to share with a church, a friend, or even a stranger. Speak through me as I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 53:11 — The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Acts 3:13 — The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I’ve lost contact with George. The last I heard, he was among the homeless in New Mexico. When I knew him, he was a husband, father of two children, caretaker of a paralyzed woman, and a “wheeler-dealer” businessman. While he was often the underdog himself, George always championed those less fortunate than himself. When his eight-year-old son took money from his dresser (almost $1000) and had to face the music, George asked his son what he thought would be a fair punishment. Shaking with fear, he said, “A whipping.” George took out his belt and asked, “How many?” “Two,” came the reply. “Do you think that’s enough?” “No.” “How many do you think you deserve?” “Ten,” came the tearful reply. “OK,” George said, and he handed the belt to his son, took off his shirt, knelt down, and instructed him to give him the punishment he deserved. I don’t need to describe the rest. I know it really happened. George showed me the welts. While I may consider such brutality cruel, the lesson was biblical. That is what Jesus did for you and me on the cross for our iniquities (sins). He loves us that much! How will you respond?

PRAYER

Holy God, how could we ever endure the pain and suffering we deserve from You for our sins?! We thank You in the only way we know how, even though it seems so inadequate. We offer You our lives as Your servants, willing to take up our cross and follow You. We pray in Your holy name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 4:18 — The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

Luke 11:35 — (Jesus said:) “Consider whether the light in you is not darkness.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The stained glass windows in my grandmother’s church always fascinated me. They were the gems of great price through which only God’s light could shine. At the ripe old age of five, I had no trouble sitting still beside her. I didn’t understand most of what the pastor was saying. I couldn’t sing the liturgy and usually didn’t know the hymns, but the beauty of the light that came through those windows was mesmerizing. I’m sure my quiet nature on those Sundays puzzled Grandma because I was pretty active otherwise. What she didn’t see were the angels using sunbeams through those windows as a slippery slide as they came to join us in worship and hiding from those without eyes to see. She didn’t see them wink at me and place their fingers to their lips to tell me to keep our secret. I felt no fear of them because I knew that only the good angels could slide on God’s sunbeams. Once I heard a quiet thud on the window as one of the “bad angels” got stopped. (Probably a bird, but then....? ) I haven’t “seen” angels since growing up and have a rational mind telling me what those colors, lights, and thuds really are, but I have never lost my reverence for the light that casts out all darkness. Have you ever stared at the sunbeams coming through stained glass? Why don’t you, next time you can? Maybe you’ll regain your childish (child-like) sight and see what God’s love sends our way!

PRAYER

God of Light and Rainbows, thank You for sending Your angels and messengers of grace to give us a glimpse of the glory yet to be revealed. Let us bring Your Light to those who live in darkness, and give us Your Word to speak to those in need of encouragement. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Hosea 6:4 — Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early.

Matthew 18:21-22 — Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Dad showed me how to stack shocks of oats when I was about five or six. These bundles of grain were almost as tall as I was. Still, he patiently demonstrated by gathering several bundles and leaning them together so they would stand on their stubble side to dry out before the threshing machine arrived. Then, he let me do it. My first try was pretty wobbly, but Dad showed me how to improve it. After three or four attempts, I finally got one that made him smile. Living the life of a Christian can be a lot like that. We may know how it is to be done but mess up numerous times. We may even rebel and refuse to live our lives the way the Father wants us to live, but God’s love never gives up on us. It is always there to forgive our sin and encourage us to try again, and again, and again.... Knowing how God loves and forgives is a model for our way of life. People around us don’t “build their shocks straight and true,” so God calls on us to forgive them and encourage them to try again. I can imagine my father’s frustration in teaching me to “build a straight shock” because I felt it as I did the same with my boys. The “shocks” I taught them to stack were, among other things, the principles of giving their employers an honest day’s work and loyalty. I can thus imagine our Heavenly Father’s patient frustration with us, his children, again and again, and again.... Need to give someone in your life another chance? Remember your Father’s example!

PRAYER

Forgiving Father, the petition I drag my feet to pray in the Lord’s Prayer is the one that connects the way I forgive with the forgiveness I long for from You. Help me to forgive “as I have been forgiven” in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Isaiah 60:1 — The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

SCRIPTURE

Zechariah 10:2 — Diviners see lies, the dreamers tell false dreams and give empty consolation.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 — Test everything, hold fast to what is good.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

One of the little kids in our school was a gullible kid who fell for everything. The big kids got him to stick his tongue on the school pump handle one winter day. The girls convinced him their mud pie tasted like chocolate. His brother sent him to find “snipes” in the cornfield south of the school. The list goes on. For some reason, he just didn’t think things through. It took numerous tricks before he started wising up, questioning, and investigating before accepting at face value everything anyone told him. There are lots of “tricksters” out there trying to convince us to “lose weight without effort,” “heal what ails you with a pill,” “get rich quick without any risk,” to “trust me!” So who do you believe? Who do you trust? How do you determine the good from the bad? The wise check things out before leaping into an empty pool of promises. The Bible provides many tests of truth, proven to be reliable witnesses of the Way, the Truth, and the Life that God wants for us. Before believing or acting on the words of prophets, gurus, or others with claims “too good to be true,” we need to ask the fundamental question: Is this what Jesus would say/do? Perhaps it seems too simple, but then again, Who else ever loved you enough to die for you, continues to guard you, and guide you? He will not let you down!

PRAYER

Trustworthy Lord, it is not always easy to see through the lies and misleading declarations of those who want my attention, money, and loyalty. So open my eyes and ears to Your Truth, guide us through the mazes of untruth, and give us the wisdom to see the difference, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 121:3 — He will not let your foot be moved, he who keeps you will not slumber.

James 4:5-6 — Do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But he gives all the more grace.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The interstate highway is a reasonably quick way to travel by car, but it has drawbacks. After a long period of driving, I get groggy, catch myself falling asleep, and have to pull over to either change drivers or close my eyes. Occasionally I have even missed my exit, usually resulting in a detour to the next exit and back. Any time I may have gained is lost by the time I get on the right road again. What a relief to know that God neither slumbers nor sleeps. God knows the Way - in fact, He created the Way, so there are no dangers of getting lost for those who let God be their co-pilot. That same day-by-day loving care promises to guard and protect us from all evil. The trick is to take God’s path, not our own. You need not ask my wife how bad I am at finding an address on my own without a map! I confess. I am making some progress, but recovery is a long hard road. I pray I learn the lesson in this life and the next so that I “seek the Lord, while He may be found.” That is the desire of our “jealous” God, who wants us on His Way so that He can bestow His grace on us each day. Groggy today? Let it be a reminder of the One, who, on your behalf, is wide awake!

PRAYER

You, O Lord, are our original GPS! You created the Way, the Truth, and the Life before Adam and Eve, and You gave Him to us to save us from the faulty paths our sinful natures choose to take. Bless us with Your guidance daily and give us the wisdom to follow it, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 55:8“— For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are my ways your ways,” says the Lord.

Matthew 2:12 — Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they returned to their own country another way.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I had it all planned out. I would go to a four-year school. I would major in music and become a music teacher. It all made perfect sense to me. I had thought about the ministry, but music didn’t require four more years of school after college, and music was what I thought was my real passion. However, the school I wanted to attend cost more than I could afford—seventeen times more than the junior college, which was closer to home. I played organ, piano, and sousaphone, but my first music course— “Teaching Elementary Music”—convinced me that I didn’t want to be a music teacher. It seemed like all the doors were closing on me, and I had to look at another major. Looking back, it is apparent that God already had other plans for me. Years later and wiser, I’m incredibly thankful that God knew a better path than I did. Instead of complaining when things don’t go the way we plan, we need to consider thanking God and asking God what His plan is for us. God may be warning us that we won’t be happy going our way or that there is a better, more fulfilling route to take. Instead of being frustrated and stalled, why not be excited, curious, thankful, and empowered by the knowledge that God’s ways are always better than our ways?

PRAYER

All-Knowing God, I thank You for guiding me through the maze of choices I have for following my passion. Continue to lead me to the best and most fulfilling work You have for me. Help me let go and let You be the One who knows the best Way. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 103:15-16 — As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone.

1 Corinthians 15:51 — We will not all die, but we will all be changed.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

My grandmother on Dad’s side of the family died the same week my great-grandmother on Mom’s side passed away. I had the flu the same week and wasn’t sure if that was how it felt to die. I was only five and unacquainted with death. I knew Grandma better than Great-grandma, but it all felt so unreal. After Grandma’s funeral, we went to see Grandpa. I knew she wouldn’t be there, but the house I played in when Grandma was living seemed empty and wrong. I believed Grandma went to heaven and I would be with her again one day, but that promise seemed as hollow as her empty bedroom. I’ve grown up and conducted hundreds of funerals as a pastor. I know the theology and believe it with all my heart, but my humanness continues to experience the separation death creates. I long for fulfilling the promises when we will be reunited with those we love. More than that, I pray for the Day of the Lord, when Christ will defeat death entirely, a Day when there will be no more death—no more separation. Every funeral is a reminder that the Day has yet to come. May we live each day in hope-filled expectation.

PRAYER

Lord of the living, those in heaven and those on earth, bless the memories we have of those who have gone before us to their heavenly home. Give us comfort in the hope and expectation that one Day You will wipe away all tears from our eyes and welcome us to Your presence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Numbers 24:17 — A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.

Matthew 2:9 — There, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising until it stopped over the place where the child was.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I’ve been to Washington DC several times, and each time I was able to find my way to the center of the action at the Mall by aiming toward the Washington Monument. It is visible almost everywhere, so it is hard to get lost. Leaving the city is another problem. There are no good landmarks by which to guide your selection of streets. Once I ended up at the city dump! Another time I ended up on a freeway going the opposite direction from the one I wanted. I don’t think I’ve ever taken the same road out of Washington, DC, twice. I can imagine that the wise men appreciated God’s special star leading them to the Christ Child. (Note—they, too, went home by a different route—but for another reason—sort of!) We don’t always have a star to lead us, but we do have a cross, and this Ash Wednesday, we begin to take our journey through Lent, looking to the cross by which we have been saved. If you’re having trouble finding your way, why not use the cross to lead you to His Way? The pain of repentance was borne for you by Him on that cross. Now, the joy of His peace is waiting to lead you Home.

PRAYER

It is easy to get lost, Lord, in the maze of worldly treasures and pleasures. Help us keep Your cross, not the sparkle of jewelry, in sight so we can be led to salvation in You. Thank You for being our Guiding Light. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 9:24 — I am the Lord: I act with steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.

James 3:17 — The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hostility.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Our neighbor was a man of good intentions. He always intended to build a fence, but it was never finished. He intended to chop the weeds out of his corn, but, except for the year my sister, brothers, and I did it, the weeds multiplied faster than rabbits. I was always amazed he got any of his crops planted or harvested. We have probably all rubbed shoulders with people who will say one thing and do another or will say they will do something, but, you know from past experience, it won’t get done unless you do it yourself. Then there are those quiet doers you can depend on who will have the job done before you expect to start. They don’t waste energy on empty words and empty promises. They just act. God is like that. God’s Words, like His name, are verbs—action words. When God speaks, love, justice, and righteousness happen. We may not be wise enough to recognize them at the time, but the good fruits of God’s grace come into our midst anyway. We are encouraged by God’s Word to put the same thing into practice with our family, friends, neighbors, and enemies. How well is your word respected?

PRAYER

God of steadfast love, justice, and righteousness, fill me with the power of Your Word so that I become an instrument of Your peace and mercy to everyone whose life I touch this day. Work the miracle of Your grace in me and through my words, in Jesus’ name and by His example. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 18:6 — In my distress, I called upon the Lord, to my God I cried for help. He heard my voice.

Matthew 14:30-31 — When (Peter) saw the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He was in trouble. Tied up by some unseen monster, he struggled against his bondage, screaming like an attacking horde of wild animals. Red-faced and angry, this prisoner of the bedsheets cried out to his father for help. Recognizing the voice and the distressed tone of the hurricane, I raced in to rescue him from the terrors of the night that surrounded his bed. Unbound and secure in my arms, his screams turned to sobs of relief as his tiny hands clung to me, his redeeming savior. With such imagery, each of us is given the promise of One who hears our voices, offers His rescuing hands, and holds us safe, calming the raging storms, monsters, and terrors that bind and imprison us. The good news is that we don’t have to go it alone. We don’t even have to scream. God hears our slightest whimper or whisper when we call out His name. What binds and imprisons you? What has you sinking beneath the wind and waves? Jesus hears your call. He has His hand reached out to meet yours. Stop trying to fight it on your own. Take His hand. He will love to help you end your distress.

PRAYER

Lord, lift me up when I am down. Hold me close and cradle me near Your ear so that my voice, even my whispers, are never far from Your hearing or Your heart. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Daniel 9:18 — We do not present our supplications before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies.

SCRIPTURE

Ezekiel 34:16 — I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak.

Romans 8:26 — The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Stage fright is a traumatic happening in the life of anyone who finds themselves in front of an audience—even those of us who speak in public regularly experience it from time to time. Mild versions of it can help force a person to concentrate. However, “Gary” had never been on stage before. We had both volunteered to be in the high school class play. Neither of us had many lines. Gary only had four words, “Let’s get our coats.” For some reason, he froze. There was a prompter behind the curtain attempting to help. “Let’s...” “Let’s.” “get...” “get.” One word at a time until all four came out with an absolutely perfect monotone. We hustled him off in an artificial effort to get coats and leave the stage. Sometimes we find ourselves speechless, even in prayer. I have discovered that myself, believe it or not. There were times when I hurt and was at a loss for what to pray for with someone in my own family. At those times, all I can do is close my eyes, listen to the silence, and allow the images or thoughts that come into my mind to frame the words of my prayers. The Spirit speaks to me more deeply than when I have all the words at my disposal. It is in our weakness that God’s strength can be released in us most fully. Thank God for His prompting and strengthening grace!

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for sending Your Spirit to speak for us when we are hurting too much or too confused by events in our lives to speak for ourselves. Let Your words guide us through the turmoil to the certainty that You are with us and hear our need, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Hebrews 3:15 — Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 55:2 — Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is good.

Matthew 6:20 — (Jesus said:) “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I am discovering my problem is not just my problem. It is a national epidemic! I am among a multitude of people who would like to blame it on others—genetics, stress, chemicals, fast foods, unfortunate childhoods.... But, to be absolutely honest, I must confess, I do it to myself. I’m sure that others with my self-inflicted ailment would have to admit to the same thing if they could be honest. Our problem? We eat all of the wrong things! Those empty calories, fat-filled delicacies, and useless ingredients which have been dressed up to tickle our taste buds leave us fat, lazy, and hungry for more. Isaiah the prophet and Jesus our Lord both knew what they were talking about. The things with which we stuff ourselves and attempt to satisfy our desires have no eternal significance. They will never satisfy our hunger for the things of the spirit, and they are useless trinkets compared to the treasury of God’s kingdom. How about joining me in seeking the real treasures of heaven and passing up second helpings of the empty calories of this world?

PRAYER

True and only Treasure, we must confess that we follow in the footsteps of the first people who fell for the temptation of eating “forbidden fruit” rather than the “meat and potatoes” of Your loving grace. Forgive us, Lord, and place a longing for Your Treasure in our hearts. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Hebrews 3:15 — Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

SCRIPTURE

Lamentations 1:20 — See, O Lord, how distressed I am....  I have been very rebellious.

Philippians 4:6 — Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

One of the hard lessons we learned on the farm as we worked with animals to prepare them for showing at the county fair was that positive reinforcement had a better effect on the animals than punishment. Animals we treat with gentleness and affection will respond with the same. It may take some time, but they usually come around. There were a few exceptions, but we suspected that a previous owner was mean to them! My parents and 4-H leaders taught us to reward them even when they didn’t perform as perfectly as we wanted because it encouraged them to try again. God is not a show animal we can manipulate with rewards. Just the opposite. God is the one who rewards us with undeserved grace and mercy, even when we are rebellious. Therefore, even before receiving - even when things are at their absolute bleakest—we have reason to thank God for the miracles He performs for us. We cannot out-give God. We can only respond to His goodness. In everything and anything, with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, we bow before the throne of grace, confident that God knows what we need, even before we ask. Why not spend the rest of the week practicing this type of praying?

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for prayers You are already in the process of answering. But thank You also for the unanswered prayers, which would not have been good for me or someone I love. Thank You that Your timing is perfect, even when our patience is not. We give thanks in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Hebrews 3:15 — Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 51:11 — The ransomed of the Lord shall return. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

1 Thessalonians 4:17 — We will be with the Lord forever.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

It is tough being a prisoner of war when you are only six. The enemy captured me before firing my first shot. They marched me through the cornfield streets with two other prisoners and locked me in the “hoosegow.” We could see the war going on, but we couldn’t escape. It was one of the game’s rules— “once captured, no escape” unless rescued! So we sat watching and wanting to get back into the action. It didn’t take long before our side captured an equal number of the enemy, and the generals agreed on a prisoner exchange. We were ransomed, and we were the price of the ransom. Once freed, we whooped and hollered and headed for the safety of our bunker. Obviously, we were playing a children’s game. In real life, those I have talked to who really were prisoners of war didn’t have the privileges or the fun we had. Their lives were often a living hell. The cost of their ransom was usually paid in human lives. It was no game! Those who sin are slaves and prisoners of sin. Their ransom has been paid with the blood of Jesus, who offers to set free any who repent. Those who accept His terms are free and will live in the safety and security of the Lord’s house forever! We have been set free!!! Is there any doubt we should live each day with joy and gladness?

PRAYER

How easy it is, Lord, to take our freedom for granted. We do it as a nation when we forget the cost paid in human lives to be a free nation. We do it also in our spiritual lives when we take for granted the freedom from sin, death, and the Devil, which was paid for by Your Son. Forgive us, Lord, for it is in His name we pray. Amen.
