WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Joshua 5:14 — Joshua fell on his face to the earth and
worshiped, and he said to him, “What do you command your servant, my Lord?”
John 5:24 — (Jesus said:) “Anyone who hears my word
and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under
judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Dad sold our work horses when I was five or six. He
was using a tractor and they were no longer needed. So, when neighbors moved in
a mile from our farm with riding horses, I was thrilled. Wayne, one of the
three boys, was my age, and invited me over to ride horses. I accepted the
invitation without hesitation. Since I had never ridden a horse, it was an
exciting, but humbling experience. Wayne and his brothers were excellent
horsemen. They grew up with them and usually rode bare-back, meaning I didn’t
even have a saddle-horn to hold on to.
The horses were also smart enough, especially “Buck”, to know how to
have fun with a novice like me - trot until my brains were almost sloshing out
my ears, then abruptly stop and lower his head!
It made for a quick exit and an undignified landing. It was only when I built up my leg muscles
enough to cling like a vice-grip and anticipated Buck’s mischief that I finally
reached somewhat of a truce with him. He could still dismount me in a flash,
but tolerated me, as long as I played by his rules. He taught me that he
was boss and if I wanted to ride on him, I had to treat him with respect. God
is not a horse we can ride when we feel like it, but God does expect us to
humbly let God be God and play by His rules. We must believe in God’s power in
all circumstances and live out our purpose in His plan. When we don’t, we find
ourselves “dismounted” and separated. How well do you “ride” the Lord’s “horse”?
PRAYER
O God, my Master, thank You for tolerating me,
especially when I think I’m in control. Teach me to “ride” by Your rules to
accomplish Your Plan. Give me the wisdom to know when to “hold on tight” to
Your Will, and show me the way to invite others to join us as Jesus did. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Numbers 6:25 — The Lord make his face to shine upon
you, and be gracious to you.
2 Corinthians 3:18 — And all of us, with unveiled
faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being
transformed into the same image from one degree to another; for this comes from
the Lord, the Spirit.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
When you are around farm animals a lot, you can begin
to read their faces - sometimes. Dogs often gave away their moods with their
eyes and their tails. If they were angry, their whole body spoke a warning that
combined with the growl of their voice. I was responsible for feeding the
calves and pigs on our farm. I could tell when a calf was playful or sick. Pigs
were harder to read. I didn’t waste as much time with them, but I could tell
when a sow would let me near her piglets and when her brood was not to be
messed with. The Bible has more than 400 references to the face of God. From
the Old to the New Testament, the writers speak of God’s face as a blessing and
a judgment. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai with the 10 Commandments, God’s
face was reflected so brightly on the face of Moses that the people, in their
sinful nature, were blinded by it, and begged him to wear a veil. God shows His
face, His countenance, His presence to us in many ways, letting us glimpse His
smile in someone else’s smile, in the twinkle of their eye, or the tear on
their cheek. God’s face may be glimpsed on the face of anyone of any age, if we
have the eyes to see, the ears to hear, the compassion to care. Have you been
looking for the face of God in your neighbor?
PRAYER
O Lord, let Your face shine upon us, so that our faces
may reflect Your glory, as Moses’ face did. Look with favor on us and guide us
to those most in need to Your smiles. Place within us the spark of love that
will show in all that we do as we follow the example of Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 11:7 — The Lord is righteous; he loves righteous
deeds.
1 Corinthians 6:11 — You were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the
Spirit of our God.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
We didn’t have a sand box. There was a nice one at
school, but the closest we could come at home
was a dirt pile. The best dirt piles were those which some setting hens
worked over in attempts to make nests. The hens turned the hard packed dirt
into fine dust we could mold into roads, hills, mountains, and, with a little
water, caves. The trouble with using water was that the dust turned to instant
mud, like instant pudding. After an hour or two of playing, we were covered
from head to toe in mud. Mom usually appreciated the fact that we could play
quietly all afternoon, with only minor fighting and bickering. However, every
trip from the door to the bathroom required crossing the kitchen floor! As the
oldest I was often the first to cross “no-man’s-land” to clean up for supper.
Once, when we were having company, Mom scrubbed and waxed the floor while we
were playing. When I got to the door she yelled “STOP!” Before I could cross I
had to take off my muddy shoes while she laid down a newspaper path to the bath
room. Like little ducks following the leader, my sister and brothers followed
me along the path to the bathroom for a thorough clean up. Once cleaned up Mom
thanked us and lavished praise on us for helping her keep the floor clean for
company. In the waters of baptism we are washed, made holy, and purified so
that we are worthy to walk on the narrow path of righteousness our Father has
laid out for us. To remember our baptism daily is to relive our cleansing by
the One whose love for us is strong.
PRAYER
Gracious Father, thank You for washing us clean in
baptism and for the opportunity to remember and be cleansed again and again.
Forgive us for our repeated returns to “play in the mud” of sin. Give us a
desire to repent and return to the joy of Your pure Spirit. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Jeremiah 2:21 — Yet I planted you as a choice vine,
from the purest stock. How then did you turn degenerate and become a wild
vine?
John 15:5 — (Jesus said:) “I am the vine, you are the
branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart
from me you can do nothing.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
One of the contests I prepared for in one of my high
school classes was “Seed Identification and Judging”. We were expected to study
the sizes, shapes, and diseases of about 50 crop and weed seeds. At first it
seemed impossible to tell the difference between alfalfa and clover, ragweed
and pigweed, but with a little practice, we managed. The objective was to help
us determine what seed was quality and what was contaminated with other seeds,
diseases, or even weeds. Imagine how sad it would be to pay top dollar for high
quality seed, only to discover it wasn’t the seed you wanted, or was badly
polluted with weed seeds! Now you have a hint of God’s problem with us. When
God finished with creating us, we were “Very Good!” Like good seed gone bad,
God discovers that humanity is producing, not the purpose for which we were
created, but something for which He has no use. We are contaminated by sin and
we pollute. We need cleansing. We need a Savior! From the root of Jesse, He has
come. He will come again. How we long for Immanuel- God with Us!
PRAYER
True and Living Vine, forgive our acts of growing away
from Your perfect plan. Place within us the seeds of the Holy Spirit that will
help us grow according to Your Will and Way. Make love, peace, kindness, and
gentleness a part of our nature so that we can truly serve You as we serve
others. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 3:25-26 — Do not be afraid of sudden panic,
for the Lord will be your confidence.
Mark 13:13 — (Jesus said:) “The one who endures to the
end will be saved.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
There is a skill to getting chickens rounded up and
put in their pen. Trying to scare them into going your way only causes them to
scatter. Rushing them is perceived as an attack and causes the same effect. A
third mistake we made was to panic when one or two chickens bolted from the
others. As soon as we chased after the ones that got away, the others took
their cue and scattered. It was easy to get frustrated and even give up. But,
if we slowly herded those we had rounded up in, and patiently shooed those that
bolted, we could do the job quicker than if we were in a hurry. Our goals and
purposes in life are sometimes like those chickens. If we get in a hurry, we
may lose out entirely or waste a lot of
time and effort back-peddling to achieve what we wanted to do in the first
place. Many people are in such a hurry to “get ahead” that they leave God out
of their lives. They don’t have time for worship. They can’t afford the time it
takes to read and study the Bible. Prayer is for those times when they have
nothing else to do or are in such crisis they have nowhere else to turn. But
God calls us to slow down, hang in there patiently, and let God be God. After
all, the only purpose which really matters eternally, is the purpose God has
determined for us - even before we were “conceived in our mother’s womb.” Do
you have time to worship, to pray, to study the scriptures? Why not make it a
priority this Advent season. You’ll be glad you do.
PRAYER
I’m sure You’ve heard the prayer, Lord, that is a
half-hearted joke: “Give me patience, Lord. But do it right now!” Lord give us
patience, endurance, and the grace of perseverance, that comes with Your
perfect timing. Thank You for coming to us and answering our prayers, “when the
time is right.” Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
1 Samuel 14:6 — For nothing can hinder the Lord from
saving by many or by few.
Hebrews 4:16 — Let us therefore approach the throne of
grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in
time of need.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
When I was in kindergarten, our home was a mile from
school. It wasn’t far, but the road was “unmaintained, ” meaning it was not
graveled. There were several steep hills of very grease-like loess soil, often with deep ruts, between home and
school, making the road almost impossible to travel during rainy seasons or
after snow storms. I discovered early on that no matter what, Mom or Dad would
find a way of getting me home. Sometimes Dad came on the tractor. Once he
walked to school and carried me most of the way home on his back. The one
exception was a blizzard, but I had no fear, because I knew I would be safe at
my grandparents - a mile in the other direction, and the prospect of staying at
Grandma’s house was always a treat! Those who know the Lord, have the assurance
that neither, bad roads, nor bad weather, bad neighborhoods nor bad enemies
will keep God from carrying us Home to the throne of grace. Wars and terror are
no barrier; neither are illness or disease.
In fact, St. Paul reminds us that nothing in all creation can separate
us from God’s love. Because of God’s great love for us we can be certain that
no matter what detour we take, we have the amazing privilege of approaching the
throne of Grace - the great “treat” of eternity with our Lord! Can anything in
our life stop the Lord from saving us? The joyful answer is “NO!”
PRAYER
Good and loving Lord, thank You for making Yourself
accessible to us in this world and in the next. Thank You for coming to live
among us and with us in Jesus, so that we are assured that nothing in this
world can keep us from You. Show us the ways in which we can share that Good
News. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Zechariah 9:9 — Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he.
SCRIPTURE
Deuteronomy 30:2-3 — Return to the Lord your God,
...then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on
you.
1 Corinthians 6:12 — (Paul wrote:) “All things are
lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful, but I will not be
dominated by anything.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
During harvest, Sunday was not a day of rest. It
started like every school day. Up at 4:00 to milk and get the other chores done
before we had breakfast. Instead of going to school, we went to the fields to
bring in grain or to the bins to prepare them for the next load. We could have
stayed out all day until chore time, but it was hard to work on an empty gas
tank or an empty stomach. Fortunately both needed filling at the same time and
our return to the “home place” about noon and three o’clock served both
purposes. Returning to the Lord provides refreshment, renewal, and restoration
in much the same way. Like Mom having compassion on her hungry hard-workers,
the Lord knows what we need, even when we don’t, and restores us to Himself.
The sadness is that we don’t always know when we need God’s “filling station.”
We are tempted to run on empty or to fill our physical and spiritual tanks with
“empty calories.” How often do you “return to the Lord your God...?” Sundays
are a good minimum to start with. Why not work on creating a daily refueling
habit. God would love to “restore your fortunes and have compassion on you.”
PRAYER
Restoring and Renewing Lord, thank You for filling us
with good things whenever and wherever we come to You. As we look forward to
Sunday, make our hearts yearn to be filled again and again with Your gracious
presence. Show us those we can invite and with whom we can share the joy of
Your presence in Jesus. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 77:14 — You are the God who works wonders; you
have displayed your might among the peoples.
Mark 1:15 — (Jesus said:) “The time is fulfilled, and
the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
My parents weren’t afraid to tackle any project. At
least that was the impression I had when I was young. When the house needed a
bathroom, they installed one in an old pantry. When Dad needed a windrower, he
built one from scrap metal . When Mom needed an archway between the parlor and
the living room, she took a sledge hammer and made it. Dad took on the job with
her. When we needed a milk barn, Dad converted an old horse barn. The list goes
on. What I didn’t know until later years was the importance of the “someone else” who did the finish work,
sometimes undoing things that were “botched.” There are some things we can all
do, but to get the job done right, it often takes a real professional to finish
up. I could have made a plate rack for my wife on which to display her nice
cups and saucers, but it would have looked like a shelf that belonged in a
garage. Our friend Bob made one of such beauty that it belongs on display in
the finest of china shops. My friend God did that with the creation of heaven
and earth, of all things “visible and invisible!” But my friend God didn’t stop
with the creation of the universe. He sent the Son to clean up what sin had
botched up. Our friend Jesus isn’t finished yet, either! When the time is
fulfilled, He will put the finishing touches on His kingdom and invite all
those who repent and believe in Him to enjoy the beauty and joy of the
Perfection of His Creation! Are you ready to call on the Master to start His “finish
work” on you?
PRAYER
Master Creator, Builder, and Renewer, remodel our
hearts, minds, and souls so that the perfection of Your creation is not marred
by sin. Forgive our botched attempts at doing things “our way” and help us to
follow Jesus in doing things Your Way. Thank You, Lord. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 22:11 — Do not be far from me, for trouble is
near and there is no one to help.
Hebrews 4:15 — For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect
has been tested as we are, yet without sin.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
The first time we traveled in Germany, we spent the
first five days with friends who took us everywhere we needed to go. At the end
of that visit we boarded a train for Berlin and were basically on our own. I
knew some German, but not nearly enough. We knew a little about reading train
schedules, but, again, not nearly enough. Near Berlin we had to switch trains,
got on the wrong one going the wrong way before finding someone who could set
us straight and put us on the right track. Often in the following three weeks
we experienced a strong desire to call our friends and beg them to join us and
not “be far from us,” but, by the grace of God and friends in other cities, we
made it to all of our destinations. When we consider that we are all travelers,
“aliens”, or “sojourners” in our home away from HOME, is it any wonder we long
for Someone to guide us through the treacherous by-ways of this world?! We need
Someone who knows the ins and outs, the valleys and high places, the rough
roads and the pleasant paths which will get us safely to our final Destination.
We need Someone who has been here in person Himself! We need a High Priest with
proven experience and a Proven Plan! We need Jesus! Have you invited Him to
join you on your journey?
PRAYER
Gentle Jesus, thank You for coming to this world to
show us the way to the Father. Be with us, Lord, and make our paths clear and
sure, so that we do not take the detours of sin that lead away from You. As You
show us the Way, help us to help others get on the “Train to Glory” with You.
Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Exodus 20:13 — You shall not murder.
Matthew 5:44 — Love your enemies and pray for those
who persecute you.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
I never killed anybody, except a few hundred thousand
headhunters, renegade Indians, storming Nazis, rampaging Chinese, and ruthless
bank robbers, of course. We grew up in very dangerous times and were attacked
almost daily by some “blood-thirsty” army or other. But I never really killed
anybody, and even the thought of someone actually taking a life, made me sad. I
have to admit that when we learned the words of Jesus in Sunday School: “Love
your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” I was happy to know
Jesus’ stand on the issue. War, of course, was a different matter!? But at the
same time I was uneasy about Jesus’ words because sometimes my sister and my
brothers were my “enemies,” not just in a game of war, but in real life. They
could get under my skin and really make me mad! Was Jesus expecting me to love them!?
How could I pray for my twin brothers and love them when they had hidden my
favorite tractor and refused to return it? How could I love a sister who called
me names when Mom wasn’t around and then lied to get me in trouble? It seemed
so unfair! Years later, in confirmation class, I was shocked to have to
memorize Luther’s explanation to the fifth commandment: We are to fear and
love God so that we do not hurt our neighbor in any way, but help him in all
his physical needs. In my mind that meant that if I didn’t love my enemies
and pray for them I was guilty of murder!!! All the loop-holes were gone. Jesus
closed them, not by command, but by dying for me and all enemies of all times,
and showing me the need to do the same. I’ve discovered that I don’t have to
like them or even approve of their actions or life-style, but I do have to love
them and pray for them. Are you willing and able?
PRAYER
Loving and forgiving Father, hatred should no longer
has any place in our vocabulary. Forgive us when it creeps in and festers
because of our prejudices and preferences. Help us learn to love even our worst
enemies and pray for them as Jesus did while suffering on the cross. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Ezekiel 11:19-20 — I will remove the heart of stone
from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, so that they may follow my
statutes and keep my ordinances and obey them.
1 Corinthians 6:13 — (Paul wrote:) “In return - I
speak as to children - open wide your hearts also.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
There were times, when working with animals on the
farm, that we had to be hard-hearted. We had to put up barbed-wire fences to
keep the cows out of the green alfalfa. We had to chase them out of the corn.
We had to brand them with hot irons and cut off their horns. We had to stick
them with needles and tie them with ropes. There were also times when our
hearts melted and we laid down fresh bedding, milked their swollen udders, and
nursed them back to health. Human hearts and minds can slowly but surely calcify
and harden against the Lord. The heart of Pharaoh did when Moses wanted to lead
the people out of Egypt. The hearts of God’s own people did numerous times,
causing the prophets to urge them to repent and return. The hearts of people of
every age are either hardened or melted by adversity or bounty. What does it
take to soften and melt hearts that put up walls to keep God out? Sometimes a
baby or a little child can reach in to open hearts that have been locked shut.
So, God came into our world, not as a fully grown worldly king, but as a
helpless infant seeking a home in hard hearts. Will you open up and let Him in?
PRAYER
Come, Lord Jesus, come into my heart this day. Soften
those hard and unbending parts of me that turn away Your love. As You bless me
with Your presence, help me share Your wondrous love with those whose hearts
still long to be embraced by grace. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 146:7 — The Lord sets the prisoners free.
Mark 9:24 — The father of the child cried out, “I
believe, help my unbelief!”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
It was always fun to watch the young farm animals when
they were finally set free from their prisons - their barns and pens. Baby
chicks instinctively tried out their wings and ran helter skelter, chasing
bugs, flies, and any other moving object. At the end of the day it was
difficult to shoo them back into the safety of their chicken coop, but the next
morning, when we let them out again, their joy seemed even greater than the day
before. Baby pigs stretched their leg muscles chasing and wrestling one another;
and calves frolic and kicked up their hoofs enjoying the opportunity to
exercise their freedom. I have been privileged to see humans set free from
prisons of depression, illness, and addiction express themselves in much the
same way. In fact, it is my image of our response to the joy and excitement
those who are in Christ will express on the Day of the Lord when we discover
the full impact of total forgiveness and unlimited acceptance by our Lord. We
too will frolic and dance for joy at what the Lord has done for us. The church
should practice celebrating with great joy, instead of being so sober! Wouldn’t
it be great if we could see every Sunday worship as just that - a practice
celebration of what God has done and is doing?!!! After all, it certainly
should be a “feast of victory for our God!” Why not give it a try?
PRAYER
Joyous Light of Heaven, we give You praise and thanks
for wonderful, undeserved gift of Yourself. Help us truly celebrate all that
You have done and are doing on our behalf, and the amazing gifts You have in
store for us beyond the limits of the earthly life. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Luke 21:28 — Stand up and raise your heads, for your
redemption is drawing near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 55:16 — I call upon God, and the Lord will save
me.
Luke 18:7 — (Jesus said:) “Will not God grant justice
to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night?”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
One of our neighbors died just as the harvest was
starting. His only son, who was away at college, came home for the funeral and
attempted to finish what his father had started, but it looked like the only
way the job would get done was to drop out of school. One of the other
neighbors put out the call, gathering enough other neighbors with equipment to
complete the harvest of his crops, a full month of hard steady work, in two
days! In essence, that is what God calls us to do for our neighbor on His behalf
and in His name. Sometimes I fear such “neighborliness” is lost on modern
humanity. But then I hear of people responding to disasters of all kinds, with
the same kind of determination. God does answer prayers through our efforts and
the efforts of others, but God also intervenes in ways we can only call miracles.
Ask any survivor of a disaster who has had a close call. Most will tell you
their survival was purely the work of God’s grace. Calling on the Lord may
bring a neighbor, an angel, or even God Himself. We will never be in despair
when we learn to trust in the Lord. God responds to our prayers, even when He
has to come as a baby!
PRAYER
You spoke to Moses in a burning bush, Lord. You spoke
to Elijah in a still small voice. You spoke to us in the cries of a baby and
later in the anguish of Your dying Words from the cross. You continue to speak
to us through our neighbors in need. Open our ears so we can hear. Amen.

SCRIPTURE
Psalm 73:23 — Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
John 10:28 — (Jesus said:) “I give them eternal life,
and they will never perish.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
What a deal! The three-year old was restless. She was
attending her uncle’s wedding, waiting for her parents to “do something!” and
she just couldn’t sit still another minute to watch them have their pictures
taken. Both parents were in the wedding party and Grandpa and Grandma were
trying to keep her busy while doing what parents of the groom are supposed to
do - sitting and waiting. Seeing his niece squirming, and the stress of his
parents, another uncle came to the rescue. “Want to go for a walk with me?” You
could see the hesitation. It was a big church, much bigger than the one she
went too. Chances of getting lost were pretty good. Then came the offer she
couldn’t resist: “You can hold my hand so we don’t get lost.” What a deal!!!
Without further hesitation, her face lit up in a smile, she grabbed her uncle’s
hand, and they were off to investigate this strange new world. Would it
surprise you to learn that Jesus makes the same offer to those who are His
brothers and sisters by baptism? He does! He is no stranger to this world, for
He humbled Himself to be born as one of us for that very purpose. His promise
to be with us always is always active and available to those willing to
take His hand and trust Him. Our real Big Brother loved us enough to die for us
and still loves us enough to enjoy our journey with us, wherever we go. Who can
ask for anything more? What a deal!!!
PRAYER
Our Big Brother Jesus, thank You for taking my hand
when I am weary or afraid. Help me feel the strength and security that comes
from Your loving presence. Walk with me through this troubled and scary world,
and lead me joyfully to the presence of our Father. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 58:11 — You shall be like a watered garden, like
a spring of water, whose waters never fail.
John 7:38 — (Jesus said:)“Let the one who believes in
me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow
rivers of living water.’”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
We had a number years of drought when I was growing
up. City kids probably never noticed, but out on the farm it effected
everything we did. Irrigation, which is common on those clay hills today, was
not even considered a possible option for the crops. Our farm had running
water, but the well Dad had dug went dry. In addition, what little drinking
water we got came through blue clay and, after a short time, smelled too bad to
drink - like rotten eggs. The garden, like the crops, began to dry up, until we
carried water from the creek. There were springs of water there that never
dried up and the grass and trees around the springs thrived. Those springs help
me picture the water of life “which never fails” which is promised by Jesus.
From Him comes life to the parched gardens of our souls. The whole world may be
suffering from a spiritual drought, dried up and surviving on putrid pools of
sin, but for those who believe, the delicious, fresh, and flowing River of Life
is available for the asking. The invitation is always there: “Let the one
who believes in me drink.” So, what are you waiting for? Our spiritual
drought is over!!!
PRAYER
Water of Life, give new energy to our parched souls.
Fill us with the pure refreshing spirit of love, peace, and joy that come from
You. As we celebrate Your coming again, help us be aware of the water that
washes us clean and energizes us with new life, even as we share it with
others. Amen.

James 2:5 — Has God not chosen the poor in the world
to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to
those who love him?
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Perhaps it was only a financial consideration for my
parents. Every living animal was worth something and worth saving, even the “runts”
that were too weak or helpless to force their way to the “dinner table.” The
baby pigs, picked on baby chicks, or wobbly calves were always separated from
the other competitors, given special attention and extra rations. They often
became pets and usually, in time, grew strong enough to join and compete with
their brothers and sisters. Because of them I often find myself cheering for
the “underdog” in sports, and am an easy touch when it comes to travelers with
sob stories. In a sense, didn’t Jesus do the same? The scriptures are ripe with
stories of the poor widows, the blind beggar, the desperate outsiders. If this
was Jesus’ pattern in dealing with the poor in the world, shouldn’t our living
and our giving reflect the same pattern? Certainly we are not trained or
equipped to take in every needy person who comes to the door, but we can
support those who are. There was a day when a poor carpenter knocked on a door,
hoping for a simple room for his pregnant wife, but was turned away. May we not
be guilty of doing the same thing again... and again... and again....
PRAYER
Great God Almighty, You came to our world, not as a
powerful King, but as a “runt” - a lowly, helpless infant. You know firsthand
the plight of the poor and destitute, and challenges we face. Give us eyes to
see Your eyes in the faces of those You want us to serve. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Jeremiah 12:3 — You, O Lord, know me; you see me and
test me - my heart is with you.
Acts 10:31 — Your prayer has been heard and your alms
have been remembered before God.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Years ago I received a telephone call from a former
pastor whom I admired, asking me to consider a position on the staff of a large
church in a big city. I was flattered and excited about the possibility. As I
flew there to meet with him and various committees and groups, I wondered why
he wanted me. I asked the question when I had the opportunity. “I knew you when
you were a struggling student and found you to have all the qualities I believe
this position needs.” He knew me and chose me. That was what was important to
him. I was not able to accept a call to that church, but have been especially
grateful to him for considering me worthy of the position. God knows everything
about every one of us. Isn’t it amazing?! God knows more about us than we know
about ourselves, and still loves us and chooses us to be part of His Plan. We
may judge ourselves unworthy of the sacrifice of Jesus, but God’s love and
compassion for us judges us worth every lash of the whip, every nail in the
cross, the spear thrust in His side, and even His descent to the pits of hell
before His resurrection. From the cradle, to the cross, to the empty tomb,
Jesus answers the prayers of our hearts. What does Jesus see in your heart? You
may not feel worthy of the gift. Humanly speaking, you’re right! But thanks be
to God, Jesus says “I know you inside and out, and I still love you. Come, walk
with me and let me love you even more!
PRAYER
Loving God, how amazed I am that You love me enough to
come into my world as one of us and die for me. There are times, Lord, when I
don’t even love myself, yet I know that You love me and will love me to the
end. Forgive my failure to love and serve others in Your name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 9:10 — The Lord is a stronghold for the
oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
1 Peter 5:7 — Cast all your anxiety on him, because he
cares for you.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
When I was in country school I sometimes worried about
arithmetic assignments. Mom would sit me down at the kitchen table and go over
the problems with me so that by the time I went to school, I had no worries.
When I was in high school and went out on my first date, I was really nervous
and wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do. Dad drove me in to town and gave me
some advice which took away my fears. At
almost every age I’ve had someone to turn to who could help relieve my
fears. How sad I feel for those with extreme anxiety disorders, for whom a “little
talk” doesn’t do the trick. The good news for us all is that there is one who
is able to do more than just “talk.” The Lord has the power and ability to care
for us at any age and at every stage of our lives. The “even better news” is
that God wants to help us and longs for us to “cast all our cares
on Him.” We all have stress and worries that almost overwhelm us from time to
time. But the Lord, who is with us always, is available to those who call on
His name. The real problem is letting go of the problems and letting God take
care of them. Are you willing to let go and let God?
PRAYER
Patient Lord, I fret and stew about little things and
big things, forgetting that You are the One in charge of all creation. Forgive
me for trying to take Your job and leave You out of the solution. Help me to
let go so that You can lead me from a manger, through the Cross, to the
resurrection. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 94:18 — When I thought, “My foot is slipping,”
your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.
2 Peter 1:10 — Be all the more eager to confirm your
call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Neither of my parents were musical. They liked music,
but never learned to play an instrument. In me they saw potential. (Could it
have been my pot and pan serenades at age three, or my grain-bin organ concerts
at age seven, or the fact that I loved to sing anywhere and anything?!) When I
was seven or eight they took my sister and me to B.P. Osborn for music lessons.
When he moved away we went to Mrs. Weddingfeld. That was when I moved from
piano to organ. Lessons were like stepping stones for me, helping me focus my
skills in the right direction and avoiding as many of the bad habits of early
learners as possible. I remember having a terrible time playing one song and
being ready to give up, when Mrs. Weddingfeld showed me a simple technique for
overcoming the obstacle. It was so simple, but felt so great! When I stumbled
and fell, it was usually because I was doing something wrong, and my teachers
were able to lift me up, show me a better fingering or better technique, and
move on. At other times they were a tremendous encouragement for me to keep
practicing and working. Our walk with the Lord should be much the same. Prayer
and worship should be our practice sessions, building our skills of listening
to the Lord’s Voice and living the Lord’s Plan. Pastors, respected Christian
teachers, and spiritual mentors may provide the human voices of encouragement
and correction. Together, these “teachers” help to confirm our call and
election, and prevent us from stumbling through life in confusion. How are your
“practice sessions” going?
PRAYER
Lord and Teacher, thank You for sending teachers at
every stage of my life to mentor and guide me down the path You set before me.
Bless them as they have blessed me. Give me the insight and wisdom I need to be
that kind of Teacher to others as I do so in Your name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Daniel 12:3 — Those who are wise shall shine like the
brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars
forever and ever.
Romans 12:6-7 — (Paul wrote:) We have different gifts
...if it is teaching, let him teach.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
After more than 20 years of formal schooling and
yearly continuing education seminars, I can speak with the voice of experience:
there are some really good teachers and there are some really bad ones. The
difference is not in how many degrees they have, how long they have taught, nor
how well they know about the subject. Some of my best teachers were “wet behind
the ears.” One of my country school teachers had only a high school diploma and
a semester course on how to teach, but she was really good! On the other hand I
had professors with multiple degrees, even a doctorates, and had published
books on the subject, but couldn’t teach worth beans! There is a difference
between knowing the material in our heads or in our hearts. There is also a
difference between loving the material and loving the students. The wise
teacher puts the two together. It can’t be done by everyone. It is a gift of
God. Jesus knew those principles. When He was only twelve, Jesus spent time
with some very important teachers in the Temple. From the time He began His
mission, Jesus taught “as one with authority and not as others.” Crowds came to
hear Him wherever He opened His mouth to speak. He taught as One with
knowledge, but also as One with compassion - love for those with ears to hear.
Have you learned from the Master Teacher some techniques for leading others,
not to your wisdom and knowledge, but His? May you shine like the
brightness of the sky as you share your gifts!
PRAYER
Master Teacher, thank You for giving us a perfect
model of the perfect teacher who love the students as much as they love the
subject. Give us a passion for the lessons You want us to share with other, as
well as a deep loving passion for those You send us to teach. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Isaiah 40:3, 10 — Prepare the way of the Lord. See, the Lord comes with might.
SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 42:1 — I have put my spirit upon him; he will
bring forth justice to the nations.
John 18:37 — Jesus answered (Pilate), “You say that I
am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify
to the truth.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
One of our friends is living with her daughter because
of health problems. When we visited her, she asked us to help her get some
things from her own house, which has a security alarm system. She gave us the
code to punch in to disarm the system, but one element of the code was
incorrect. In minutes the alarms went off and the phone rang. The security
people, in rather gruff tones, wanted to know another code number to determine
if we had any business being in the building or should send a SWAT team, even though
she talked to our friend. Our friend “deputized me, giving me the code to relay
to the security office, who then became very sweet, and gave me instructions
for turning off the alarms. God promised to “deputize” or put His spirit upon
His anointed to act in His place; to bring justice to the nations and “turn off
alarms.” God also “deputizes” other leaders, kings, presidents, governors,
pastors, teachers, and yes, even you and me, to work on His behalf and in His
name to bring the Good News of God’s love and justice to all nations. When the
bells and alarms go off because of sin and injustice, on which side of the
fence are your riding? You, by your baptism, have been deputized - “sealed
by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.” Do you
help to remedy the problem as an anointed “deputy” of the Lord, or do you try
to ignore it? Pilate tried to wash his hands of the responsibility. Jesus
accepted His. Whose example do you follow?
PRAYER
As the celebration of Your birth draws near, help us
to remember, dear Jesus, that Your coming was for much more than sparkly lights
and cheap tinsel. You came with a mission which You pass on to us. Give us
courage to serve faithfully as Your “deputies” and ambassadors. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Philippians 4:4-5 — Rejoice in the Lord always; again
I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is
near.
SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 58:1 — Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion.
1 Corinthians 1:10 — (Paul wrote:) “I appeal to you,
brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be
in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united
in the same mind and the same purpose.”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Most of our country school teachers were pretty good.
However, there were some whose tempers were experiences we learned to avoid at
all costs. My sixth grade teacher could be as sweet as sugar, but was
especially volatile! It didn’t take much to set her off. That’s not saying we
were perfectly innocent, but it seemed like she had more “hot buttons” than
most. Her bark and her bite could be equally painful, at a time when teachers
could still “touch” students! She left no doubt who was boss, nor what rules
would be strictly obeyed. It is easy to forget that God has “hot buttons” too.
When God’s chosen people hit those buttons, the prophets were sent to “trumpet”
them, shout them, demonstrate them symbolically, and in any way they could, let
there be no doubt! God’s bark and God’s bite can be equally painful, as well as
have eternal significance. When the unity, peace, and justice for which God
created us is broken, God’s tears flow in disappointment and God’s temper
flares in anger. Unity and agreement do not require us to be clones in our
thinking, but they do require that we leave judgment to God, so that we can
love, even our enemy. Is God trying to teach us some country school lessons?
How well are we paying attention?
PRAYER
God of amazing patience and love, forgive our turning
away from You and Your Word. As trumpets announce the coming of earthly kings
and Christmas lights and carols announce the coming of Christ, open our hearts
to receive You. Turn us from sinful rebellion to joyful welcome. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Philippians 4:4-5 — Rejoice in the Lord always; again
I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is
near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 65:9 — The river of God is full of water.
Colossians 2:9-10 — In (Christ) the whole fullness of
deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of
every ruler and authority.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
There was always something really special about
filling a silage pit, a hay barn, or a grain bin at harvest time. Filling one
and starting another meant a smile on Dad’s face and a joy in Mom’s step. It
meant a special meal and a celebration because bills could be paid and some of
the projects that were on hold could be completed. When the Nile River
overflowed in Egypt, before the dam was built, it cleansed the river and
fertilized the land. When the river of God is full, it overflows with
blessings. And when God overflows as the body of a baby in Bethlehem, the
blessings of God flow to even the least of God’s beloved. The good news for
those who believe and are baptized is that God’s blessings overflow to fill to
the brim every part of His body, giving us reason to smile, to dance for joy,
and to celebrate the harvest which was, which is, and which is to come. How
full of Christ are we? Immanuel, “God With Us” is coming to “full fill”
all righteousness. Let us prepare our hearts for His coming! Let us prepare our
souls for celebration!
PRAYER
Lord of overflowing love and grace, thank You for
caring so much for sin-filled humans that You emptied Yourself to become one of
us. You are no longer so high or far away that You do not know our needs or
temptations. Give us the willingness to share Your presence with others. Amen.

CHRISTMAS EVE
WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Philippians 4:4-5 — Rejoice in the Lord always; again
I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is
near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 63:1 — O God, you are my God, I seek you my soul
thirsts for you.
Titus 2:11 — For the grace of God has appeared,
bringing salvation to all.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
I went through a succession of inexpensive used cars
when I was in high school and college. I wasn’t really that rough on them. They
just finished wearing out while I drove them. One quit on me half-way between
home and school on a dark, cold night. It slowed to a stop, spit out oily
smoke, and stalled. Nothing I did would make it start again. I had to walk to a
phone to call for help. When Dad arrived, I was so relieved! I knew he could
fix the problem. I was at an age when Dads weren’t supposed to be cool, but
that night I was so relieved. I didn’t know which way to go, but I knew Dad
would. And he did. The night before Christmas, the world was stalled on the
Way. Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem to pay taxes and welcome God to their
borrowed combination motel room and stable so that He could fix the world’s
engine. The world’s best Mechanic and Savior arrived to a cold reception.
Little did the world, even in the neighborhood of Bethlehem, know that a new
day had dawned. A new vehicle was coming for saving those on the Way, searching
for the Truth, and seeking the Life everlasting. Tonight, we celebrate that
Grace which passes all human understanding. Why not invite Him into your
personal stable? May He be born in you this night! May you no longer be stalled
alongside the road, but celebrate the Journey with Joy! Merry Christmas!
PRAYER
Welcome, Jesus, into our world and into my heart. Make
Yourself at home, casting out all doubt, sin, and fear. Draw me to those
activities and people who will encourage my spirit to grow in Your Spirit so
that I can share this Good News with those who still don’t know You. Amen.

CHRISTMAS DAY
WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
Philippians 4:4-5 — Rejoice in the Lord always; again
I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is
near.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 4:8 — I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
John 1:14 — The Word became flesh and lived among us.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
I enjoy doing first-person dramatizations. They are
difficult to do properly, so I don’t do them often. I spend weeks getting to
know the character and developing a script which will bring out their story and
emotions. If I get into the character deeply enough, it takes a few minutes to
step “out of character” to be me again. I once “became” the inn keeper for
Christmas Eve worship. After the service, someone asked “Nabil” if he would
turn away a pregnant woman again. In an instant I became “Nabil” and answered
with a shrug, “How was I to know she’d have a great Son and make my inn
famous?!” That is a question we all must live with each time we see a newborn.
Living as children of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus, we all have the
potential for greatness when we live “in character.” The Word became flesh and
lived “in character” among us that first Christmas. Now the Word becomes flesh
and lives “in character” in us when we live the way Jesus would live. How well
do you know His character, His emotions, His love, His compassion? How well do
you “live” in His character? Would anyone mistake you for Him? Why not give it
a try?! Have a very merry “in character” Christmas!
PRAYER
Come, Lord Jesus, live in me and help me become a true
reflection of Your love and grace. Give me the strength and courage to live as
a “little Christ” for those around me, and give me the wisdom to see the “little
Christ” in those You send my way. Amen.

Philippians 4:4-5 — Rejoice in the Lord always; again
I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is

SCRIPTURE
Psalm 25:20 — Do not let me be put to shame, for I
take refuge in you.
2 Corinthians 8:9 — For you know the generous act of
our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became
poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
The day after Christmas was usually a “down” day for
me. It may have been a matter of coming down from a “sugar high.” We usually
didn’t have a lot of sweets, but Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we got to “pig
out!” Instinctively, Mom knew what would happen. In the days before Christmas
she force-fed us on healthy foods and kept us busy with extra chores - cleaning
out hog and cattle pens and spreading fresh bedding, fixing holes in sheds to
keep the animals warm, and laying down cobs for paths to some of the animals in
muddy places. Then, for two days, the nuts and candies collected from school
and church programs were set out to enjoy. Mom and Dad both became like kids
for those two days, although they still had to be parents, and they still had
to make certain the necessary chores were finished. It caused them a lot of
extra effort, but they did it for our sakes. They couldn’t afford a lot of
toys, but sacrificed what they could to make certain we had something to play
with. Jesus sacrificed all the “toys and sweets” - the glory of His Heavenly
Home, emptying Himself to join us in our spiritual poverty, so that we might
join Him on His journey to our Heavenly Home where we will discover what it
really means to be RICH in the things that matter. The days after Christmas Day
are still CHRISTMAS! Enjoy them!!!
PRAYER
Giver of every good and perfect gift, thank You for
the “sweet” memories of Christmas celebrations and for the best gift of all,
Jesus, Your Son. As we come down from our “sugar highs”, lift our spirits with
reminders of why You came and what Your coming will do for us eternally. Amen.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Mrs. Wilson, my seventh and eighth grade teacher,
helped us prepare projects for the county fair. Mine was a topographical,
plaster of Paris, model of the state of Nebraska. To get many of the geological
features as accurate as possible, Mrs. Wilson spent extra hours finding maps
and articles for me to research. Because the state slopes upward toward the
Rocky Mountains, I had to add extra layers and special features like Chimney
Rock, Court House Rock, and Jail House Rock in the west. In the last week of school,
when everybody else was antsy to escape, I still didn’t have the last parts finished. I could have
submitted it as it was, but Mrs. Wilson asked if I wanted it to be the very
best or just passing. “Whatever you do, says as much about your teacher and
your school, as it does about you.” She had already worked so hard to help me,
I could not think of letting her down. I stayed after school, and she spent
extra time helping me even more. (I received a superior at the fair for our
project.) God encourages us to do everything we do with the kind of passion
that reflects His glory. We were created by God with a purpose and for a
purpose. God looked at His creation and declared, “It is good!” God sent Jesus
into our world as the very best for our benefit. How can we glorify God in all
that we do? Are we willing to put our very best into all that we do? Our
greatest joy comes from God’s greatest delight! May we live that truth.
PRAYER
Good Lord, You gave us the very best in creation, and
surpassed all human understanding in sending Your own dear Son to live with us,
die for us, and rise on the third day to show us the way. Thank You for the
great joys and delights You share with us in Jesus. Amen.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER
I enjoy the cartoons in the paper. It is probably the
little kid in me - and there is plenty! One of the features of cartoons which
always catches my attention is the light bulb that appears above a character’s
head, letting us know that they have a brilliant idea or the solution to a
problem. Anyone who has struggled with a difficult problem understands the
feeling of coming out of the dark when the solution presents itself. Time and
time again in counseling I have struggled and prayed about problems which
seemed to have no solutions, only to discover the “light bulb” exploding with
light as the simplest answer was laid in my lap. The light shined in the
darkness and God’s Path was made clear in Jesus. We may continue to muddle
along in the dark, but God’s solution was to send Jesus as the Light for the
whole world. Those who develop a close relationship with God often reflect that
same Light. Moses did in the wilderness. Jesus did for those who had ears to
hear. You and I will, if we are willing to witness to the Light in our lives -
to the One who puts a light bulb, not only above our heads, but within our
hearts! May we discover the explosion of God’s light in our lives, and reflect
His Light in all circumstances, glorifying God.
PRAYER
Light of God, You came into our dark world to bring
Your love. Thank You for coming every day for those who call on Your name, to
lift our sagging spirits. Intensify Your light within us so that we may be
reflections of You grace to those still struggling with the dreary darkness of
sin. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK
John 1:14 — The Word became flesh and lived among us,

SCRIPTURE
Deuteronomy 12:32 — You must diligently observe
everything I command you; do not add to it or take anything from it.
Galatians 6:2 — Bear one another’s burdens, and in
this way you fulfill the law of Christ.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
We played an inside game at country school when the
weather was bad, which challenged our memories. I’ve played this “new game” in
several different variations since my school days. Our version went: “When I go
to Paris I’m going to take along ... a
comb.” The next person would repeat
the same thing, but would add something more. By the time 15 people had packed
something we were really challenged! Half-way through the next round the things
we added became a difficult burden. Imagine having laws that developed that
same way. (It doesn’t take much imagination - we already have them. Our tax
laws are a perfect example!) God urges the Israelites in the wilderness to “keep
it simple”. Somewhere along the line, those thoughts were lost in the
translation. The thought of bearing one another’s burdens works the same way
when the minimum wage earner has to take on two or three jobs to support a
family. The early reformers, Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, as well as later
reformers like Wesley, all stressed the importance of the church living as the body
of Christ by bearing the burdens of those in difficult circumstances. We chafe
under the weight of taxes. We complain about the poor being “lazy.” But, when
was the last time you complained because you had too much while someone else
had too little? Have you ever complained because someone else had more work,
more pain, more persecution, more hardship than you? Could God be speaking to
you today?
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for bearing the weight and the pain of
the incredibly hard “work” of salvation for us on the cross. Give us a passion
for caring for the poor and those less fortunate, who struggle to make ends
meet. Guide us on our journey to those who need the love of Jesus. Amen.

answer; and by night, but find no rest.
Mark 14:38 — (Jesus said:) “Keep awake and pray that

THOUGHTS TO PONDER
The most intense pain I’ve ever experienced was from
my sciatic nerve, which was so inflamed it put pressure on the disks in my
lower back, preventing most medicines from taking effect. It was not just an
ache. It was unending pain which kept me awake night and day for almost a week
before I got relief. The doctor told me that without sleep, I could not heal. I
know of others who have suffered physical pain as bad or worse than mine. I
also know of people who have suffered mental, emotional, or spiritual pain
which kept them from sleep with the same result. I was so very fortunate. I was
exhausted, but not depressed. I could pray, and I did. I prayed for everybody
and everything that went through my mind in my sleeplessness. I also had my
helpmate, Sue, and countless others - some of you - praying for me. (It was
amazing how fast relief came after I requested prayer!) During those long, dark
nights, it would have been easy to become bitter and angry with God. I had the
advantage of knowing that God was with me, even in my pain, and that Jesus’
pain made mine seem like a simple headache by comparison. However, what blessed
relief I experienced when finally I could sleep and heal. No matter what our
pain, we can thank God that He does not abandon us but suffers with us. Have
you stayed awake praying with Him? Remember to let others “bear your burden”
with you and pray for you too.
PRAYER
Healer and Helper, I know only a small part of the
enormous pain You experienced on my behalf. The emotional and spiritual pain of
sin, added to the pain of being beaten and crucified, is unimaginable. Thank
You for fully understanding my pain and Your answers to my prayers. Amen.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 — Now may our Lord Jesus
Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us
eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every
good work and word.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
New Year’s resolutions are usually a waste of the
paper on which they are written. However, when we focus on the “steadfast love”
of God and the way in which God, especially in Jesus, has kept His promises to
us, resolutions can take on new meaning. Some resolutions are unreasonable.
Some are impractical. Most are self-centered., I made a resolution a year ago -
after 14 years of writing, publishing, and emailing Daily Devotions - to stop
at the end of this year and begin a new phase in my spiritual journey. One part
of that will be to review the past 14 years of Daily Devotions and compile some
of the best into one or more books. From past experience, I know that will
involve a lot of rewriting and editing. Many of you have been with me daily for
many years as we considered the scripture and what it means for our lives. Your
notes of encouragement have kept me going, and I thank God for you. I pray that
you will find another sources of inspiration as you seek to discover God’s
plan for you. May you continue to walk and talk with the Lord as you love
and serve Him in all that you do.
PRAYER
Happy New Year, Lord! In our secular world, we get
carried away with traditions that too often exclude You. Give us the passion to
discover Your purpose for us in this world. Keep us on the path that leads
beyond our limited sight to the glories in Jesus You still have to reveal to
us. Amen.
