WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 10:17 — O Lord, you will hear the desire of the meek; you will strengthen their heart.

Matthew 21:22 — (Jesus said:) “Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Grandpa was an easy touch—that is if you could find him in the right mood. Without blinking, he would hand over a quarter or a dime for a treat. Dad could also be an easy touch, but he was wise to our schemes much quicker than Grandpa, and often he talked to Mom before caving in. Mom—well, Mom was not an easy touch but would sacrifice anything if it was something she believed we really needed. Therefore, when asking for something, it was really important to be perfectly clear about our need for it. Isn’t it good to know that God knows what we need before we even ask? God sees into the heart of the problem and can determine the difference between what we need and our self-centered greed. Even though God knows what we need, He encourages us to ask in prayer with faith. It is God’s way of examining our hearts and sincere desire for the good gifts He wants to bestow on us. It is also God’s way of helping us distinguish our own need from our greed. Like children before loving parents, we go before the throne of grace, asking and explaining our version of our needs. Thank God for the answers you receive. Even a “No.” may be a blessing more beneficial to us than a “Yes.”

PRAYER

Gracious and All-knowing God, thank You for Your command that we come to You in prayer. Thank You also for the answers You give us, whether they be “Yes,” “No,” or “Wait.” Bless us with the answers You know are best for us and for others for whom we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 81:7 — In distress, you called, and I rescued you.

Matthew 8:25-26 — And the disciples went and woke Jesus, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a dead calm.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

About forty years ago, a doctor asked me to do Christian counseling in Iowa. He wanted to be holistic in his approach to healing. The first day I was at the clinic to observe, it seemed to me that chaos was the order of the day. The two doctors and their two helpers were constantly racing here and there. An unusually large number of “challenging” patients arrived with more than the usual complaints. At one point, he asked that I meet with a foster mother and two of her severely and profoundly handicapped young wards, both of whom wore football helmets because they would slam their heads into any solid object. I felt utterly helpless and probably prayed more that day than most days of my ministry. At the end of the day, I was drained. The other workers were all smiles. They thanked me for bringing a sense of peace and calm into the clinic! On my way home, all I could do was say, “Thank you, God. I know it was You and not me!” Looking back, I know that was the absolute truth. In our distress, if we rely on ourselves, our boat will sink. But, trusting in God, the storms will be calm, even if we don’t feel it at the time. Don’t forget to call on the name of the One who can rescue you.

PRAYER

Saving Lord, when we feel battered by the winds and waves of the world, calm our minds and assure us that You will reach out to lift us up. Help us walk with You through the storms of life, and give us the confidence to continue on in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 30:19 — He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you.

John 14:13 — (Jesus said:) “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Among the many lessons, I learned as a kid is that parents have an ear programmed to the volume and frequency of each of their children. The whimper, shout, or song of each child is instantly recognized. At least they were in our house. My parents could distinguish between all six of us children and all of our various voices to the degree that they knew when someone was just whimpering to get attention or were really in need of help. God, like parents, does the same thing. God not only has every hair on our heads counted, but He can also distinguish need from want, panic from the rush, or real hurt from self-pity. God loves to hear the sound of our voice giving thanks and praise, but God also has a listening ear for those with sincere needs, asked in the name of Jesus. We don’t need special singing or speaking lessons. God knows the voice of our hearts. How well do you know God’s voice?

PRAYER

Listening Lord, we thank You for hearing us when we pray. We thank You for knowing our voice as well as You know every bird of the air. Give us ears and hearts to hear the cries of those hurting and the willingness to be Your grace and love to them, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 31:8 — Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute.

Matthew 25:40 — Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Each spring, when little pigs were born, there seemed to be one or more among them that was a “runt.” The runts were smaller and less able to fight their way to the “dinner table.” As a result, they grew weaker and less able to defend themselves against their brothers and sisters, who often acted like pigs. Whenever I was in the hog barn, I tried to protect and encourage the runts and make room at the “dinner table” for them. One year I made a special effort for one of the runts and was happy to see significant progress within a few weeks. Finally, the runt was able to hold his own! God has done that with his chosen “runts”—Abraham and his relatives living among the big and powerful nations and the tiny little tribe of Benjamin in the backward town of tiny little Bethlehem. Even Jesus, God’s Son, “did not think equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied Himself,” becoming a “runt,” a “suffering servant” on our behalf. Thus, Jesus calls us to champion the “runts” of the world—the underdogs and powerless, the “least” among us. They are members of God’s family too. Thank God for choosing us and using us!

PRAYER

Champion of the oppressed and the downtrodden, show us the “runts” of the world and give us the courage to be Your love and grace to them. Make us instruments of Your peace so that sorrow can be turned to joy and hopelessness can be turned to hope in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 40:12b, 13a — My iniquities have overtaken me until I cannot see... Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me.

Romans 8:33 — Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He was declared guilty, but this time he was innocent. He had pulled lots of dumb stunts and made a multitude of bad decisions in the past, but this time he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even his classmates agreed someone else was guilty. He was labeled and branded by his teachers. Nothing he said would change their minds. He truly wanted to turn over a new leaf when he entered junior high, but the label stuck no matter what he did. His past blinded everyone. In the end, so was he. “If I’m guilty until proven innocent anyway, why bother?” Then, one day, Jeremy made a critical decision to do what Jesus would do (this was more than 30 years ago before that slogan was popular). At the time, he was in my confirmation class and decided if Jesus, who was innocent, could take what He did, he (Jeremy) could take it too. It took time, but by ninth grade, he was a changed person. The blinders of others began to come off. His word became as good as gold. His model was not his old life but a new life in Christ. He was a new creation in Christ, and God was his judge. What others said was not what was important anymore. His mark of distinction was his long hair—like Jesus in the pictures. (This was when long hair was in, and most parents hated it!) Who can bring a charge against you if you are one of God’s children? Repent, change, and leave the rest up to God.

PRAYER

Loving and Forgiving Father, thank You for reading my heart and knowing what’s really there, even when those around me think only of my old self. Renew in me a right spirit so that I can love and serve You and others in Jesus’ Way and in His name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Ephesians 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 119:172 — My tongue will sing of your promise, for all your commandments are right.

Romans7:12 — So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Our 4-H club was excellent preparation for life in the real world. We learned about care and cooperation, raising and feeding animals, citizenship, and how to tie knots. As we prepared for the county fair, our leaders told us how to groom and present our animals for the best showing for the judges. We were, in a sense, given commandments for entering the show ring. My project was a 1200-pound Black Angus steer named Sam. I knew the rules, but instead of following them, I casually leaned on Sam and did not show him well. Fortunately, Sam was a fine animal and was awarded a “reserve champion” ribbon, despite my poor performance. I got a lecture from Dad about not following rules. That afternoon, after a very complete lesson, he made me enter a leader’s contest. Following the “commandments,” I actually won a prize! The commandments of God provide an even greater reward. They are guidelines, not for making us miserable but for leading us to the winning side of the Good News. We may resist them, but God knows they will keep us from danger and lead us to Him. How well are the commandments of God leading your tongue to sing?

PRAYER

Commanding Lord, thank You for Your Laws which lead us to loving and serving You and our neighbors. Send us reminders of the rewards and the joys of walking in Your Way. Make us good examples for those who follow us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 55:3b — I will make with you an everlasting covenant.

2 Corinthians 3:6 — God has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of letter, but of spirit.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Five junior high students and I had an agreement. I would teach them guitar. They would practice. We would form a group. I taught them for six weeks, but after the first couple of weeks, they practiced less and less. They discovered that it took time and energy, and they came hoping I would show them a shortcut so they wouldn’t have to practice. After another two weeks, when it was apparent they were not going to make an effort, I considered our agreement broken. Why should I waste my time preparing a lesson if they wouldn’t use their time to practice?! God’s covenant with us is God’s promise to be our God so that we may continue to be His people. God’s only requirement is that we practice our faith—the gift so freely given. Like the young people I tried to teach, we can become fickle in our faith because it requires our time and energy. There is still so much God wants to share with us if we will only keep our part of the covenant. What’s most important in your life? What is God’s plan for you and your busy schedule?

PRAYER

Patient and gracious Lord, stir up in us a desire and a commitment to keep our part of the covenant You have so generously made with us. Make us instruments of Your love as we practice loving You and those so desperate for Your healing hand. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 26:12 — In the great congregation, I will bless the Lord.

Luke 19:37 — As Jesus was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

As a musician, I have performed for groups as small as two and as large as 500 plus. As a pastor, I have spoken to groups as small as one or two and as large as 1000 plus. Both as a musician and a preacher, the smaller groups, were more intimate and personal. However, while more unnerving, the larger groups share a far more energizing and exciting spirit. Most of us are familiar with the “Chreasters”—the Christmas and Easter crowds at worship and recognize how much more spirit-filled those services tend to be. It is not just the music, the preacher, or even the decorations, but the Spirit of God shared as a community of faith! The more, the merrier! When you are not at worship, you deprive the whole congregation of your portion of the Spirit of Christ. You deprive your brothers and sisters in Christ of your presence and your voice (even if it is only a joyful noise)! We are called together to lift our sights to the One who rose from the dead for our salvation. Can you really think of any good excuse for not participating in “praising God joyfully with a loud voice for all His deeds of power?”

PRAYER

Our Lord God Almighty, You have given us every reason for worshiping You and taken away all of our excuses for not gathering together in Jesus’ name so that where two or more are gathered, You will meet us. Place within us a burning desire to worship You with our family of faith every week. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 37:5 — Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him, and he will act.

Luke 24:28-29 — As they came near to Emmaus, Jesus walked ahead of them as if he was going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us because it is almost evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Before I was old enough to work in the fields, Dad hired my older cousin to help him with the harvest. Jerome was a good worker. He lived about fifteen miles from us, so he stayed with us rather than go home every night. It was common to have hired help stay the night, but it was especially fun to have my cousin stay. We had a lot in common we could discuss. From the time he came in for supper until we went to bed, he wasn’t the “hired man.” He was one of the family. It’s pretty amazing that God would like to come into our lives in the same way, not as a distant God from a far-away space, but as our Friend and one of our family. Those who commit their lives to Christ discover the joy of that relationship, much like the disciples on their way home to Emmaus. Jesus came to stay with them and, like one of the family, broke the bread and blessed it, opening their eyes to His true identity. May you invite Jesus to join you at every meal and every other opportunity so your friendship with Him may grow and increase!

PRAYER

Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest at every meal, every gathering, and every event of our lives. Come, not as a stranger, but as a friend and the member of my family that You are from our baptisms. May every word and every activity bring joy to Your heart. We pray in Your holy name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 62:11 — The Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, “See, your salvation comes.”

Matthew 3:11 — (John the Baptist said:) “I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We were chopping cockleburs in a neighbor’s cornfield after a mid-August rain and wind storm had passed. The storm left the ground muddy, with large portions of the corn lying row over row, blocking our advance. In addition to the intense August heat and humidity, inches of mud were caked on our shoes, making them especially heavy. We had to lift the corn to get down the rows, and the grasshopper-chewed blades were as sharp as ragged glass. It was a relief to see the neighbor come with cold drinks and a helping hand! John the Baptist saw even greater relief coming in the form of his cousin, Jesus—One who was so much more powerful and power-filled than John himself. Before Jesus, all obstacles melted away, all hindrances ran for cover, and all hope swelled in the hearts of those who count Him as their Friend. In Jesus, our salvation comes with healing and wholeness, offering all who will receive it the refreshing Water of life. So may you keep your sights set, not on the troubles which attempt to cause you to stumble, but on His coming.

PRAYER

In faith, Jesus, Lamb of God, we look to Your cross, remembering the extreme lengths You went to so that we may have a clear path to our heavenly home. Take our hand and guide us through the “cockleburs” that snag us and the obstacles that trip us on the way that leads to You. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 95:4 — In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.

Matthew 8:3 — Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I do choose, be made clean!”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

My mother’s hands were works of wonder! With those hands, she cradled, soothed, bathed, dressed, and fed each of her children. With those hands, she held the book of Bible stories she read to us at nap time, the needles with which she sewed and mended our clothes, the scissors and clippers with which she cut our hair, and the buckets in which she gathered everything from eggs to home-grown potatoes. She milked cows, cleaned and dressed chickens, and kneaded and rolled out breads, rolls, and other baked goods with her hands. Her hands applied appropriate swats on the bottom to those needing discipline, hugs to those in need of comfort, band aides to painful wounds, and frosting to cakes and other sweet delights. The hand of God has done even more—molding the mountains and valleys, forming the seas, and shaping humankind in His image. With His hand, Jesus straightened the back of a woman bent over and healed the lepers, the blind, the deaf, and the lame. With His hands, he fed thousands, raised the dead, and changed ordinary bread and wine into a sacred meal conveying forgiveness, life, and salvation. Have you looked at your hands lately? As a child of God and an heir with Christ, have you considered letting God use your hands?

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for the hands of my parents, especially the hands of my heavenly Father, from whom all things came. Thank You for my hands and the ability to use them. Let Your hands rest upon me so that the power of Your love may flow through my hands to bless others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 18:20 — He brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me because he delighted in me.

John 1:43 — Jesus found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We lived a mile from the highway with a long lane and dirt roads in every direction. In the rare years when we had a lot of spring rains, our lane was so badly rutted that the bottom of the car would rub on the high parts and sometimes “high-centered us” (held us in place, wheels spinning). Until the county road graders came along, the road to the highway became the same way. Driving down a deeply rutted road was always a challenge. Aside from the possibility of getting “high centered,” the ruts forced a car down a path that prevented turning in any other direction. The view from a rut in life can cause us to act as if we can’t change directions. Stuck in the ruts of sin, bad choices, and addictions, we come to believe we’ll never do better. God calls us out of our rut and into the broad place He has prepared for us, where we can follow Him instead of being stuck and unable to change. Are you stuck in a rut? Jesus says, “Follow me!” He will lead us in the way that leads to Life!

PRAYER

O Lord, the true path to eternal life, guide us through the obstacles and “ruts” that keep us from the Way that leads to You. Level the roads of our lives so that nothing prevents us from following You. We pray in Your holy name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

John 10:11a, 27-28a — (Jesus said:) “I am the good shepherd .... My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 139:1,2 — O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.

Matthew 6:34 — (Jesus said:) “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

One evening when I was thirteen, my twin brothers both complained of toothaches. In fact, the pain was enough to have them crying after supper. After trying home remedies, Mom called the dentist, who said he’d meet them at the office. I stayed home to babysit my little sister and younger brother. While sitting there, I began to think about my teeth and the fact that one day I would have to climb up the 50-mile-long stairs to the dentist’s second-story office above the bank, sit in his chair of terror, and let him use sledge hammers, foot-long dull drill pits, and vice grips on my teeth. At the same time, he would gleefully search for the most painful nerves in my mouth! I tried to think of other things, but dental torture dominated my thinking. When they came home happier than when they left, I should have been relieved, but being informed that I had an appointment in one week erased all sense of comfort. For a week, I worried and stewed. After the appointment, I, too, was much relieved and happy. It was bad, but worrying didn’t make it any easier—in fact, it made for a miserable week. Isn’t it good to know that God knows every burden and problem we will ever face? If only we could turn tomorrow’s troubles over to God, we would have a much lighter load to carry. An old folk song says: “Worry is a rocking chair. You go back and forth, and you get nowhere!” So true! Why not try to let God do the worrying for you? You know what? I’ll bet it won’t phase God!!! God knows He has the whole thing under control already!

PRAYER

Steadfast Lord, You experienced the ultimate anxiety of pain and suffering on the night of Your betrayal, awaiting arrest, torture, and humiliating death on the cross. Thank You for taking on our worries for us. Assure us of Your strength and courage daily as we pray in Your name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

1 Kings 8:58 — The Lord, our God, incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways.

Luke 13:11-13 — And just then, there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, “you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Watching chickens, roosters, and hens in the farm yard would be a good exercise for Christians who want to walk the Way of Christ. Chickens have a way of using their heads to lead them in the direction they want to go. It is almost as if they bend their necks in the direction they plan to go. In the Bible, there are those with “stiff necks” unable to bend to God’s will. There are also those who are “bent over” —so bent to the earth that they cannot walk the straight and narrow Way. The spirit of evil bends and twists them so much that they are bound to their old way of life. We, too, may be “bent over” and burdened by the sins and troubles of this world which bind us. Sometimes we bind ourselves to the problems we create rather than turning them over to the One who can set us free and set them straight. Do you need to let go and let God help you walk in the straight Way to His presence? It is a relief to take off the “stiff-necked brace” of stubbornness to walk with the Lord.

PRAYER

O Lord, You seek to set us free from our “bent” and “stiff-necked” condition. Your forgiveness enables us to let go and to let You be the One who directs our lives. Make us new creations fully committed to You as we walk the walk and talk the talk of Christ our Lord. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 65:24 — Before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

Matthew 6:8 — Your father knows what you need before you ask him.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Several years ago, we had a friend remodel our bathroom. The problems began almost from the first day when the parts he needed weren’t there. Several times he had to wait on one part of the project to finish and begin another. How different it was when we had a professional contractor rebuild our front porch. He thought ahead so that everything he needed arrived on time before he began the project or at least the day before he needed it. God is the best contractor of all. From the beginning of creation, God has arranged for everything and everybody to be in their own time and place. Even the gifts God gives us in answer to our prayers have been in the works and on the way in response to our needs. Therefore, even before God answers our prayers, we should begin to “thank and praise, serve and obey Him.” The answer was on its way already, before we thought to ask! Isn’t God great?!!!

PRAYER

Generous God, it is great to know that You look to our needs before we even ask. How gracious You are to have Your Son encourage us to ask in His name, anyway. Help us appreciate what You have gone through to prepare the Way for us and provide what is truly needed in our lives. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 103:1 — Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is in me, bless his holy name!

1 Thessalonians 5:23 — May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

One of my college professors had been a parole officer in his previous life. He told us about a man some of his fellow officers picked up on the street to take to jail. The man was an alcoholic who couldn’t afford booze and had become addicted to gasoline! He would siphon gas from cars with a hose to keep him “high.” Aside from the damage it did to his liver, the dangerous thing was that every cell of his body was permeated with gas. One spark would have caused him to explode like a bomb. So, when picked up by the police, they would have to take extreme caution in transporting him to avoid a static spark and a resulting explosion. Wouldn’t it be great if each of us would allow God to permeate every cell of our body, mind, and soul with His Spirit? It would mean that only health and wholeness, holiness, and happiness would be a part of our thoughts, words, and deeds. Like Moses, we would radiate the brilliant light of the Lord so that there would be no doubt about Whose we are. It would mean that, like Jesus, only goodness and mercy, care and compassion, love and forgiveness would be part of our daily living. All that is within us would praise and glorify the name of Christ who is with us now and always!!!

PRAYER

Blessed Lord, begin today to fill every cell of my being with Your gracious love, gradually replacing every particle of darkness and sin in me with Your light and life. Let Your Light shine through my every word and deed, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Nehemiah 5:9 — Should you not walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?

Luke 21:15 — (Jesus said:) “I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been speechless. They were times when I was caught by surprise and asked to respond. My mind focused on the surprise, not on wonderful and witty words. I was called on to testify in court once and thought I’d have trouble, but the lawyers preferred short, simple,” yes” and “no” answers, with no elaboration. I’ve watched POWs being interrogated and wondered how I would do under that kind of pressure. What would happen to any of us if we were grilled about our faith and our relationship with Jesus the Christ? Perhaps we, too, might feel speechless. Our Lord promises that He will give us the words and wisdom we need. The saints of the past and many faithful saints of the present have  discovered that Jesus was not making meaningless promises. When the chips are down, we will know what to say and when to say it, and when we are wiser, to keep our mouths shut. May Christ give you the words to draw others to praise and glorify His holy name!

PRAYER

O Word of God, incarnate, speak to my heart and mind so that the words I speak in any situation will be Your Words of love and grace. Keep me from blabbering away with meaningless words when silence would speak louder than rambling words. Always, Lord, let me speak in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 17:17 — Do not become a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of disaster.

Matthew 8:8 — The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

He apologized profusely because he wasn’t a member of my church. From his first words, he made it clear he was nobody deserving of my help. But he was hungry and tired. He had walked most of the eighty miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to our small town of Potter, Nebraska, on his way to a job offer in Omaha. He could go no further. The human part of me wanted to send him on his way, anywhere, as quickly as possible. The more Christ-like part of me felt compassion and wanted to help. We got him a good meal and offered him a room for the night. But he insisted he would be happier sleeping in our backyard under the stars. The following day I went out to invite him to breakfast, but he was gone. I’ve often wondered if he was “one of the least of these” Jesus claimed to be. If so, did we do all we could for him? None of us deserves the many blessings God bestows on us, but Jesus speaks the word on our behalf. We are fed, forgiven, and favored with the promise of a happy journey for eternity! Have you taken the time to give thanks today?

PRAYER

Generous Lord, we come to You empty-handed. All that we have and all that we are have come to us as undeserved gifts. When we meet people in need, remind us that “there, but by the grace of God, go I!” Help us to follow Your example of love and grace, even at the risk of being taken advantage of. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 139:5 — You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

Philippians 4:7 — The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

As we traveled the “King’s Highway,” we were hemmed in between two jeeps loaded with armed guards. On our way south to Egypt, we also had two soldiers in the back of the bus, both possessing big guns. We weren’t particularly fearful of an attack by roving bands of robbers. Still, the armed escort was a safety precaution and a government requirement for traveling through that rugged section of the desert. We were guarded and protected on every side until we reached the outskirts of Cairo. God does that for those who seek refuge in Him. We may stray away like chicks from their mother hen, but God is always there to gather us in and give us His peace. It seemed apparent to me that one well-placed missile would have taken out our protection in the desert, shattering our human peace. The peace which God gives cannot be destroyed by anything—even death and the devil. God’s peace truly does surpass all human understanding!

PRAYER

God of true “shalom,” “the peace that surpasses all understanding,” we pray with St. Paul that You “guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.” You give us the assurance through His life, death, and resurrection that we have nothing eternal to fear when we trust in His name. Thank You. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

2 Corinthians 5:17 — So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 50:8 — He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me?

Romans 4:5 — But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I felt out of place, like a fish out of water, on the first day of high school. It was my first school experience away from our tiny one-room country school. I had joined the band the previous year, and my parents drove me in for practice, so I knew some of the kids in the band. But I was a puny country hick, a freshman among the much more sophisticated upper class-men. I had one advantage most of the other country freshmen didn’t have. My uncle was a senior and captain of the football team! Like the other freshmen, I was harassed by upper-classmen, but never when Orville was nearby! I never heard him say a word. He didn’t have to. It was like having a guardian angel hovering nearby. (He probably cringed and laughed at that, but that was what I felt!) God has provided that kind of protection for all who believe in Him. God is the Judge. God is also the Jury. God has paid the price for our “vindication” —our justification—with the blood of Jesus on our behalf. We are under His protective umbrella as long as we stay within His sight. Good to be related to the King of kings and Lord of lords, isn’t it?!!!

PRAYER

King of kings and Lord of Lords, we thank You that in baptism, You took us under Your wing, adopted us as Your children, called us Your own, and promised to be there for us. Give us the assurance of Your protective grace and the courage to bring others under the umbrella of Your love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 8:18 — Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power.

Luke 6:19 — All the crowd was trying to touch Jesus, for power came out of him and healed them all.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We were literally driven to our knees. We were down to our last dollar. The church council made a copy of a dollar bill and sent it to every member to let them know it was the last dollar the treasurer had and that they didn’t know how they would pay the utilities, my salary, and the other regular monthly bills. They asked everyone to begin immediately to pray for answers to our dire financial woes. The results were truly astounding! That month almost the exact amount needed was given, and we never again reached those desperate conditions. It gave us the courage and faith to pray for even greater things so that the ministry of that small church could grow. Within a couple of years, we began to pray about additional room, resulting in the building of an addition that more than doubled the available space! Without a doubt in my mind, these things began to happen when we began to pray, relying on and trusting in the power of God and His resources rather than ours alone. Whether it is our finances, our building space, or the health of our body, the touch of Jesus can unleash extraordinary power. Why not start dreaming big in your life and your ministry, and commit it to the Lord? God may be simply waiting for you to ask!

PRAYER

Our Generous Lord, You are always more ready and willing to give than we are to ask. So, Lord, right now, we ask ____ for our church. We ask ____for our health. We ask ____ for our family. We ask _____ for our community. We ask ____ for our nation. We ask it all in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 33:6 — The fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure.

Matthew 28:10 — Jesus said to the women, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The future seemed so uncertain. I was excited about the new clothes, the new unbroken crayons, the tablet, and the pencils Mom bought me before I started country school, but I was not at all excited about the prospect of being left there with people I didn’t know! I’m glad I went. In the same way, I can look at many of the first-time things I’ve done, recognizing how nervous I felt about taking those journeys: high school in town, college, seminary, each of my calls to different churches, trips to countries where I didn’t know the language, etc., but I’m glad I went. Fear of the unknown may keep some people from attempting or accomplishing the mission God wants them to perform. Imagine how the story would have changed had the women been afraid to tell the disciples about the resurrection or if anyone else had been afraid to go to Galilee to share the good news of the resurrection! Fear (awe and awe-inspired terror) of the Lord should help us take steps of faith to go beyond our comfort zones, to walk where Jesus wants us to walk, speak the words He gives us to say, and rejoice that He has sent us on to our “Galilee” where we too can see Him!

PRAYER

Awe-inspiring God, You call us to go for You, but You do not leave us alone. You challenge us to go beyond our comfort zones to accomplish the mission for which You called us. Bless us with courage and confidence to take those steps of faith and to walk the walk with You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 29:18b — It may be that there is among you a root sprouting poisonous and bitter growth.

James 3:16 — Where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

One of the weeds that seem to thrive everywhere is bindweed or “creeping ginny.” The Indians called it “bear-bind,” claiming that if a bear stood still long enough, the weed would wrap itself around the bear and bind it. The difficulty in getting rid of it is that the bindweed roots go really deep, and if you miss even a tiny portion of it, it will grow back. Bindweed is annoying, but it is not poisonous. On the other hand, poison ivy and poison oak are both irritating and poisonous, causing severe problems, even death, in some people. They, too, have deep roots; even when the vines and leaves are dead and dried, their poison is still active. A person can get infected if standing near a fire where poisonous weeds are burned. Many sins act like that. They may be merely annoying, but they can also have toxic effects on people. Envy, greed, selfish ambition, disorder, and wickedness of every kind may seem innocent enough on the surface, but they spread their roots and their poisons to anyone who comes in contact with them. The stem from the root of Jesse, the Son of David, the Son of God is the only antidote. May we trust Him to build up our immunity and enable us to produce the fruits of righteousness.

PRAYER

Gracious Healer of our every sin, thank You for taking the poison of our sinfulness into Your own body on the cross. Continue to draw us away from the sins which invade, infect, and bind us to eternal death so that we may enjoy the fruits of eternal life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 6:5 — Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips.

Philippians 2:11 — Every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The first Sunday I preached in Fremont, Nebraska, I looked out into the congregation to see three college professors from my days a Midland College, as well as the dean of the college, a retired seminary professor, and two retired pastors, all of whom were members at that church. My first thought was, “Woe is me! I am in trouble now!” However, after the service, they were very encouraging. The former dean of the college reminded me that I was the one who had studied the lessons for the day and was prepared. He also reminded me that the only thing that mattered was that the Gospel of Christ was shared, and he needed that as much as anyone else in the congregation! We may be people of unclean lips living among people of unclean lips, but we live under the certainty that we have been cleansed in the waters of baptism and nourished and re-cleansed in the word and the sacraments. Before the awesome presence of God, we are humbled but lifted up to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! We may have exalted other humans and placed them on pedestals, but in the presence of God, they, too, stand humbled on holy ground right there with us. May our lips be cleansed by the name of Jesus, which we confess, no matter who is listening.

PRAYER

Good and loving God, You chose a stutterer named Moses to speak Your word to Pharaoh. You chose a child name Samuel to be Your prophet. The list of unlikely candidates for Your spokespersons is long and includes ME! So give me the commitment to speak Your word in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 3:12 — The Lord reproves the one he loves, as a father, the son in whom he delights.

Luke 15:22-23 — Then the son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his slave, ...” Let us eat and celebrate!”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I was warned to stay out of the pig pen. It had rained and was extra muddy in and around the hog wallow between the cattle tank and the hogs’ watering trough. I didn’t intend to enter until our only ball landed in the middle of the mess. I tried to use a long stick, but that only pushed the ball further into the muck. I lost my balance, and my arm and shoulder fell into the mud, so  I took off my shoes and rolled up my pants, thinking I would tiptoe in, grab the ball, and get out. I was fine for about three steps when the mud monster grabbed me, and I fell face first! I can only say I did get the ball before scrambling out to hose off. One look from Mom was all it took. She just shook her head and went back into the house. I suspect she went in to have a good laugh, but when she came out with a bar of soap, a towel, and clean clothes, she had put on her angry look again. The ball was washed and confiscated, and I was sent to pick up rotten apples under the apple tree. But by supper time, no one would have known anything had happened. Like a prodigal son, I was returned to the family circle. I learned my lesson, and all was well again. That’s the way it is when we return to the Lord. Cleansed, forgiven, and renewed, we are allowed to begin again.

PRAYER

Forgiving Lord, thank You for washing me clean in the waters of my baptism. But thank You even more for the renewal of my baptism, which I receive every time I confess my sins and receive You in Holy Communion. Renew a right spirit within me and cleanse me through and through, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 56:8 — Thus says the Lord God, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered.

Acts 2:41 — On Pentecost, about three thousand persons were added.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

We were a small pep band gathered to tell people to come to the Stanton County fair. It consisted of Eddie on clarinet, Jodene on saxophone, Mary on trumpet, Kathy on drums, and me on sousaphone. We were a small group, but we played enthusiastically to let people know there would be a lot more in the “big band” playing at the fair. It had taken lots of phone calls to gather this small group for a mid-summer tour of small towns in the area. We played. An announcer pitched the fair. An assistant passed out flyers, and we were off to the next town. I’m not sure how effective it was. Although, Saturdays in small towns were much more important in those days. It might have been my imagination, but it seemed to me that there were a lot more people at the fair that year. The Lord hopes each of us will be a miniature “pep band” to draw people to His Kingdom. Our instruments may be a word spoken in kindness and encouragement, a comforting hug, an act of kindness, or a living example of the way life in Christ makes living more exciting! Which of those instruments will you be playing today?

PRAYER

Conductor of the music of the Universe, thank You for selecting me for Your “symphony” of love, peace, and joy, and for making me an instrument of Your Good News. Give me the courage to sing Your “song” of grace with confidence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 98:1 — Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 12:1 — You will be in the right, O Lord when I lay charges against you; but let me put my case to you.

Romans 8:17 — We are children, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may be glorified with him.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

I knew Dad was working on a repair job I didn’t want anything to do with. I knew he was right about the field that needed to be cultivated, and I knew he wasn’t trying to be mean when he sent me into the bottom ground near the creek at the west place. But, I grumbled, nonetheless. I nearly passed out from the heat, getting up and down off the tractor to untangle the mass of bindweed wrapped around the cultivator shovels. When I finished the field, I was caked with dust, dying of thirst, and grumpy. In my mind, I rehearsed my speech as I chewed him out all the way home. However, when I pulled up to where he was working on the hay bailer and saw that he was covered with grease and sweat, with several bleeding wounds from sharp edges, my steam fizzled. I had no reason to be upset. He wasn’t sitting in the shade sipping ice-cold lemonade. He had suffered more than I had. In our spiritual walk, we may be tempted to give God a piece of our mind, but our heavenly Father made us joint heirs with Christ, who suffered on our behalf to be glorified with Him. So, what’s your complaint? Have you really suffered with Him?

PRAYER

Our suffering Servant, in the person of Jesus, You went through pain and suffering we will never have to face. Thank You for taking the tough stuff because of our sin. Give us the strength to those in need who are suffering in ways we don’t understand. Help us do so in Your holy name. Amen.

PENTECOST SUNDAY,

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:20 — Blessed be God because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 6:16 — Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.

Romans 4:13 — For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

My grandparents both came from different towns in the “old country” when they were twelve. They met through gatherings of German friends and relatives. While they chafed under some of the “old ways,” they also clung to others, causing their own children to chafe from those “old ways” when confronted by the “new ways” of their new world. Doubtless, every generation experiences some of that chafing. However, it is fascinating that grandchildren are often the ones who raise questions about the “ancient paths.” I know I did. Several times, I’ve been to Germany, the “old country,” but not to the towns of my grandparents’ roots. One of my dreams is to visit those small little villages someday to see if I can locate the remains of my grandparents’ homes. Through the scriptures, we have the sure and certain conviction that our “old country” is our heavenly Home, and the path, the “old way” to it, is through faith in Jesus, the Christ. His righteousness has paved the Way for us. May we walk in His way and live as His descendants and heir of His Kingdom, our eternal Home!

PRAYER

Ancient of Days, You bless us with a heritage dating back to the foundations of the world in which we live. Help us appreciate our past and take advantage of the “old ways” which ground us in faith while allowing the best of them to help us shape the “new ways” in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:20 — Blessed be God because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 25:17 — Relieve the troubles of my heart, and bring me out of my distress.

Acts 1:11 — (The angels said,:) “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

My wife got tickets to see David Copperfield, the magician, for my birthday one year. I know in my mind that it is all illusion and slight of hand, but my mind is often deceived. In one part of the show, he was locked in a box that was suspended over the stage. With a loud bang, the side of the box came down to reveal a living tiger had replaced him, and he appeared two seats behind us in the audience! I know he didn’t just disappear and reappear! He somehow changed positions while I was distracted by the bang and the tiger. The disciples got distracted by the ascension of Jesus into heaven and missed the point—that they were to get busy being His body in the world. We, too, may get distracted by sin, death, the devil, a busy schedule, and yes, even church activities, so much so that we miss the mission on which we have been sent as the body of Christ in the world. What are your distractions? Is it time to refocus your attention on Christ?

PRAYER

Good and gracious Lord, thank You for keeping Your focus on our salvation, even while suffering on the cross. Help us keep our minds focused on our mission, no matter what distraction draws us away. Bless us as Your body in this world, to be blessings to others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:20 — Blessed be God because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

SCRIPTURE

1 Samuel 7:3 — If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods.

Matthew 4:17 — Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of God has come near!”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

After cleaning out the hog feeders, we had a small water fight, leading to a determined effort to crawl through the jungle to capture hidden treasure from head hunters. By the time we made it back to base camp, we were mud, caked with dust, from head to toe. The Commander and Chief (Mom) called us in to tell us she would take us to town to go swimming. However, “...before you can go anywhere, you’ve got to hose yourselves off, take a bath, and put on clean clothes!” she declared. We had to put off the old and put on the new. God expects the same of us if we intend to join Him in the Mansion He has prepared for us. Jesus proclaimed the same message to those who wanted to enter the Kingdom. “You’ve got to hose yourselves off (be baptized) and change your ways (repent) if you want to enter the presence of God!” What kind of muck have you been traveling through in this world? Time for confession, forgiveness, and change?

PRAYER

Forgiving Lord, we were “hosed off” in baptism, but we continue to crawl through the muck of sin every day in thought, word, and deed. Hose us off with Your forgiveness again every time we remember our baptism. Give us the desire and strength to change in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WATCHWORD FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 66:20 — Blessed be God because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 33:11 — The counsel of the Lord stands forever.

Romans 1:20 — Ever since the creation of the world, his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

There is an old country cemetery on the highest hill, about a half mile from our farm. We walked past it every day on our way to and from school. We usually helped Dad clean it up before Memorial Day and mowed and baled the prairie grass later in the season. It was never scary for us as kids (except when the sun went down). Instead, it seemed to invite us to visit and read the stones. My Great grandfather’s big old stone is still standing there, along with the smaller stones of an aunt and uncle who died as children from whooping cough. Those stones stood tall when I was a kid and are still in that lonely, forgotten cemetery today. To my knowledge, Dad was the last person to take care of those graves. I noticed recently that many of the stones are starting to be worn away by the weather. Nothing, not even stones, in this world will last forever, but the Word of the Lord was here at creation, bringing all things into being, and that same Word of the Lord will be with us to eternity. Whether we see it or not, God’s eternal power and divine nature will always be our Source of strength. Thanks be to God!

PRAYER

Eternal Word, Your power is always creating and renewing all things. Instill Your Word of Life in every cell of our being so we do not lose sight of Your claim on our lives. Give us hearts and souls that are centered in Your love and grace. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
